think that’d be my plan anyway. Don’t suppose you or any others have info about what the job market is like in any of these provinces? Particularly Sask as I’ve heard a lot of the work is bulk haulage to/from farms etc, which is what I’m hauling over here so it might help get my foot in the door.

Also, I may well look at doing construction driving jobs. Big thing is if it’d lead to PR. My visa is only for two years with a slim chance of a third. Need to use my time wisely, transport truck drivers are a skilled occupation. Would need to check for dozer/shovel loader drivers etc.austinmike Thanks this. -
The cross border market is strong in Manitoba. I live here and can give you the companies to avoid. Biggest thing is deciding how much you want to run.austinmike Thanks this.

That’d be great man!
honestly, so long as I get a 36 a week I wouldn’t really care. Like I say I’d be thousands of miles from home anyway lol.
if you can ping me a PM I’d really appreciate it.austinmike Thanks this. -
stay away from southern Ontario (Toronto) it’s over saturated with drivers a lot of them new immigrants . Company driver rates suck and no one is hiring right now especially newbies with no experience . Once a month we get newbies asking who’s hiring new drivers with no experience. Even the big boys aren’t hiring newbies everyone wants 1 year experience and like me who has almost 17 years experience can’t even get a call back right now .
I do know some of the bigger companies will bring you over and i’ve heard help get citizenship . I think Kag canada is one and maybe Arnold brothers , but be prepared to be used and abused for a few years
With Orange man in office on the other side of the border threatening tariffs i think it’s going to get worse. Your only chance is out west Manitoba Alberta etc etc
Another thing is housing and rent is ridiculous here in Ontario i’m a hour north of Toronto and rent for a 1 bedroom basement apartment is close to 2k a month . unless you live in the middle of nowhere a house is close to a million bucks . good luck buying one on a truck drivers wageLast edited: Jan 27, 2025
austinmike and Numb Thank this. -
House prices aren't that bad out west. Even in BC, which is expensive AF, the houses aren't that bad. Friend of mine out there bought one recently right in the middle of a major city for under $500k.austinmike Thanks this.

When I got into this in 2016, after being laid off from my O&G/Trades career, I was also told you need to do OTR, to get "experience". I can tell you now, that is 100% ########. Lots of guys started in dump, shunt truck, roll off, grain hoppers, fuel tankers etc etc etc. It all comes down to the company, and their insurance.
So just keep that in mind, and don't even think about going to Bison lol.austinmike and AModelCat Thank this. -
i don’t think I’d go to Ontario man. The Brampton ‘scandal’ and a lot of other factors like the cost of living there would put me off. What you’ve said about companies bringing people over is interesting I’ll look into that! By the time I come over I’ll have a years experience, appreciate it might not count as much as a years Canadian/us experience but it’s better than nothing I suppose.
watching things unfold with the wiggy orange man. I’m sorry you guys have that idiot for a neighbour I really am.Numb Thanks this. -
that’s quite reassuring to hear, everybody has told me it’d be OTR or nothing and while I’d be happy to do that if that’s what it takes, a job like what you’ve posted sounds good.
can I ask what’s up with bison? They were one company I’d looked at and I’ve had another poster on here say they aren’t bad for a first gig. Not great but not terrible kind of thing -
Take his advise. Don’t touch them. Slipseat, sign a 2 year contract and they will abuse you. Lots of options here… hauling potatoes to the simplot plant an hour west of Winnipeg, or to the mc cains plant a little further west. Lots of potash loads from sask to the states, lots of options other than van. Fuel hauling, ltl, etc.BigHossVolvo Thanks this.
