I’m an owner operator. I have a 2014 Pete with Cummins isx 550 that’s been deleted with 523,000 miles. I have high oil consumption due to carbon packing and now I suspect my injector cups are leaking bc I’m gettin coolant in fuel/water separator filter. I know a rebuild is not too far in my future. My question is, I may have an opportunity to buy a Cummins X15. It’s 2018 565 hp not deleted with 197,000 miles on it. Would it be better to rebuild my engine or buy the X15 and do a swap out?

Can you have the new one paid off in 300,00 miles? I don't buy used trucks anymore. With the emissions I've not had much luck over 500,000 miles.
I plan on getting rid of the truck I have now between 400,000 and 500,000 miles, or atleast before the factory warranties are up.

this was my first truck so I couldn’t afford a new one. The emissions is a disaster and I would probably have the new one deleted also. And yes I believe I could have new motor paid off by then. The seller hasn’t set a sale price he told me to make him an offer. Any suggestions on what I should offer?

Ok, I missed understood you. Looking at probably $40,000 to rebuild. Say you bought the newer engine for $20,000 who would put it in and what would they charge for labor and how much down time? How much is a crate engine?
    What are the mathematics?

Here is a link for an X15 565 HP used for $39,995 with exchange.

It doesn't come with parts. Is this guy going to include everything with the motor?

    I
tried calling my mechanic but he’s not open today. I know I gotta y’all to him before final decision. Just seeing if anyone on here has been in same situation and how it fared out for them. As far as what the engine comes with I don’t know yet. I am going to look at it later today. He says nothing wrong with it. He’s building a show truck and wants to put a cat 6NZ in it‍♂️

Swap engines, no. Swap to truck with an x15, yes. You'd be dollars/time ahead just rebuilding and getting back on the road.

No have about 2 1/2 years left paying on the truck. The problem with swapping trucks is I do heavy haul and have very specific specs for what I NEED in a truck and there just aren’t any out there that are also affordable.

You could try the special oil that valvoline created for Cummins. It’s like $100/gal but I was able to get another year out of mine by using it. Call your local Cummins dealer or research it yourself. You run it 1 oil cycle, day 20k miles and it uses a detergent to decarbon the rings. You’ll still have some cylinder scoring but is much less oil usage.

The X15 is a far superior engine. I would never consider going back to the ISX without factory warrant of some sort.
