I am having a Dynasys installed tomorrow. Seems the best route to go IMHO

Are the ESM's Cali legal? Or for that matter PA or NY legal with their 5 minute idle laws?

Any one using small portable gas generator as a backup for battery APU? Harbor Freight sells 800 watt one for less then $100 and can be used to recharge batteris when needed. I have TriPack on my truck and love it, just wish it had bigger than 65w alternator for microwave and other appliances.

a ESM is the size of 1 battery, it sole job is just to start the truck

if you have a battery APU it is a must.....because when your batteries go dead you can still start the truck

the battery apu I will be building for my truck this year will have 8 batteries (deep cell) for a/c, heat and power
the setup i'm doing with the ESM will be about $3,500, that's 8 deep cell batteries, two 2,000 w invertors (1 for the ac/heat & 1 for house load) the ac/heat unit and the ESM.

a driver I know has this system in his truck with 6 batteries and a 5,000w invertor (no ESM) and it will keep his truck cool for 14-16hr in Laredo last summer

A friend drives for a company that has the battery APU's. They are going back to regular APU's. They are not very good at cooling a truck.

They have to run the truck to charge it like others have said. When he is stuck for a long time and turns into a longer time, the truck does not idle and then no cooling or motel.

Shore power is an option, many trucks are being equipped to plug in and there are more places offering it. The Idle Free is the one
I saw at the dealer yesterday, I didn't ask about them, but they have shore power enabled to run everything and use a pure sine wave inverter for AC power when running on battery. 4 deep cycle glass mat batteries come with it. I have asked about the TK EPU but at the time, they weren't recommending it.

Any older system can quit working pretty much at any time from what I have seen, but they are worth fixing if you have one for the most part from fuel savings. Many of the battery ones aren't being fixed for some reasons.

Transport America is using the battery EPUs, and their last new trucks were all white, before that, they were dark blue. I'm guessing they have figured the white trucks would be easier to cool, and stay cool better.

I wish we had even Opti-idle, but we don't and until regulations go into effect, we won't. The Tri-pacs on the 2009s the company owns are taking a fair amount of upkeep to keep them running.

I'd rather have a new truck without than an old one with an APU,but to each his or her own. I haven't had to sit in this one yet.
