They told me (in Harrisburg) to basically get bent without an active DOT/MC number unless I was leased on and could prove it with a lease. What did you give them for proof of insurance?

That's weird. Did you explain to them you just purchased the truck and needed to get it home with a temporary?

I did. They also asked about insurance. That's was an issue too since nobody would write me a policy without a DOT/MC number or lease. I could NTL/Bobtail if I was leased on somewhere but I wasn't. So even if the clerk was cool about it they still couldn't do it without insurance. The GVW has much to do with it. More so than the actual intended use of the vehicle. Some states are letting people do varying non-commercial registrations for class 8 for people that haul some personal big toys around or those converting them into mobile homes etc etc but it's a real mess in most states between the GVW and the insurance companies. I went through it VA too now that I think about it. I hate to say it, but I drove it back with no tags, no insurance...nothing! I was so fed up with it all I did it out of pure frustration. I would not recommend that to anyone either. I'm an idiot. Don't be like me!

I already had my own liability insurance when I got mine. But they did not require any other commercial credentials because technically it was no different then an RV at that point. Again I think it comes down to ignorance behind the desk. Around here you can spend all day screwing around with something stupid at a big dmv or go out of town and probably walk out with a set of plates for an M1 abrams in 10 minutes.

When I bought my truck, dealer gave me a Colorado temp tag. Drove it home and put the truck to work...kept that on the truck until the expiration date and never had any issues.

Commercial Liability?

Well, that makes sense. You had commercial liability insurance and proved it. Now try that with no lease or your own numbers. It normally won't work. You need your own authority to get commercial liability and/or you need an NTL policy. To get the NTL you need to be leased for the get the liability insurance form the carrier. They all lean on each other like dominos.

On your own numbers and commercial liability?

My authority was not active yet. You need the truck first. Im really thinking you are just mistaking the apportioned plate for a simple temporary tag to transport a truck home. At any rate I would suggest that the OP call the state he is picking the truck up in and just ask them whats required for temp tags.
