Hello all, my situation is slightly or somewhat unique(or maybe not). I've had CDL class A with Tanker endorsement for 15+ years. I recently quit my job(same company for 15 years) due to health problems that won't allow me to work like I should. The issue is I don't exactly have 15 years CDL driving experience.
My duties including operating a drill rig, managing a crew, and semi truck transporting of drill rig and miscellaneous equipment, almost all flatbed stuff, some water truck, vacuum truck, dump truck driving as well. 90% of the time we're doing physical work(or pretending to), the other 10% of the time we're driving this stuff around the country. In fact we often joked that we're not truck drivers, we're drillers that drive trucks. I'm not inexperienced, but certainly not anywhere the same level experience of a 15 year full time driver. I'm not sure the best way to go about this, I don't want to mislead an employer but also don't want to screw myself out of a job. I'm open to any advice you might have for my situation.

There's no misleading to it. You were a CDL-A truck driver for 15 years.
Drivers coming out of the oil fields don't have any problems finding work as full time drivers and you won't either.
Where is your location?
What type driving job do you want?
Do you have endorsements?

Dozens of companies will hire you. You'll get further training and orientation on a particular companys equipment and procedures. For example, pulling flatbed, then going to a reefer company; you'll get training on that type of equipment and procedures. Same with what you've been doing the last 15 years. The new company will ask about what you've been doing, then will tailor the orientation to that.Last edited: Dec 10, 2022
Brettj3876 and jl22 Thank this. -
come up with actual/factual miles you have driven, not years.
so, if you can (somehow) prove you have 15,000 miles, then say so.
get it..?
and NO, DO NOT mislead a company on your experience, they will find out in a NY minute, and fire you on the spot.
they will verify your experience by contacting former employers.jl22 Thanks this. -
Yea, I guess you're right. I prefer something local if possible, one company in particular that I'm going to talk to Monday, but worse comes to worse I'll do anything and everything.Chinatown Thanks this.

You pretty much have your choice of local/regional/OTR depending on your location. Nothing to worry about.
