Yes definitely a young mans game, and I'm getting to the end of my young days, if I haven't already passed them up. I was in the restaurant business for many years so I've talked to many drivers and I know what they go through. Definitely not an easy job. Like I said, not my first choice but I'm open to it for some experience
Advice please

There is a 50 year old on our fleet that has more energy than I do. I'm 36 now.
He works out and he eats well.
Of course I didnt really like rolling with him because he was always going out of way off route to meet his dietary wants. He also drove around looking for his gym so he can work out and get a shower. He also wanted mass on Sunday. It got a bit irritating.
A couple of times I would wake up and look out from the curtain amd the truck would be parked on the shoulder of some road, in front of a Cracker Barrel. He LOVED that restaurant.
But I digress. A healthy older man can do young man's work.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Run a dump or belly. Or work for a farmer. etc.. Where u from?
Blackandgold, Rideandrepair and x1Heavy Thank this. -
I have been known to go a block or 3 out of route for a cracker barrel, or applebees, or. lol
The way you guys talk about the truckstops lack of sit down restaurants, if I had to go back down there and run otr again, I would be looking for something like that about every day, from the sounds of it. lolRideandrepair Thanks this. -
I dont like going off route for lunch because we have multiple stops during the day and it makes us late... Or we finally get to said restaurant and parking is sketchy.
I like getting to my first stop for the next day then I will walk to get something. But during the day when we have appointments I dont like worrying about anything else.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
I totally understand, but my case was different. I pulled a flat or step, rarely ever had an appointment and also rarely did short runs, so was generally a day ahead of schedule anyway. I also didn't do a lot of multiple drops, unless I put together a load of parcels. I did pull a 17 drop load out of Ar once, but only because it paid good bucks. lol

I would love to OTR in my own truck. Hard to give up the team checks though.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
I would be some kind of mad if my truck stopped at a sushi bar, probably mad enough to fire it and get a company job. lol

I did a 6 wheeler for 7 yrs. before T/T, I got lucky with a Local Job, that was desperate for Drivers. Literally the first place I applied.Took a pay cut, but got the experience needed. The OT worked doubled my old pay. I’d go with the combo Job, it should work out well, very common these days, chances are you’ll be working 50+ hrs a week. Making more than an OTR Newbie/ Trainee. Plus home nightly.T/T experience means you’ll never have to look hard for a Job again. You’ll pick your Job, from multiple choices. 6 wheeler jobs, don’t pay well, and are scarce.Too many Drivers available. Switching to OTR will be easy, in the future. Lots of Jobs.

So I had my interview today. Before we went too far with it I questioned him about the 24/7 on call thing. I would start out in training loading and unloading and moving trailers around the yard for 5 weeks. That would be a steady daylight schedule. After that I would be on call as a driver with one gauranteed day off a week, the other 6 I could get called in at anytime. He said it would mostly be overnight. Then after about 6-12 months i would become a "regular" employee. Every April and october they bid for their shifts. It goes by seniority so I would be last and would be stuck with a steady overnight schedule. The interview ended there. I thanked him for his time and told him that would not work for me now. He told me to call him if anything changes.
