If you want to pay for school out of pocket, look at community college programs; they're cheap and good. Should be able to find a good community college school for around $2K where a private school might be $5K or $6K.

There's some good companies that hire new CDL grads from Tampa and Central Florida. Make some good money and see the USA.

I see companies on Craig's List offering "free" training for a CDL, if you agree to work for them after graduating. Why are they doing this? Can't they not find enough qualified and experienced drivers out there...is this type of thing "normal"/legitimate?

    thanks again for any advice!

Yes, it's normal and legitimate. For some, it's the best or only way to enter trucking. The trucking companies want a contract so they get a return on their investment. Their investment is CDL training for you which is expensive. In this economy, many people are bankrupt and really don't know where their next meal is coming from. Some trucking company CDL schools furnish transportation to the school, a hotel room, and meals. Some aren't so generous and some are very generous.
