My nephew is wanting to drive a truck. He asked me what would be the best way to start out for a year? I told him if he could meet someone in school that he got along with pretty good that team driving might be the best way to start out. I also told him that he needs to come to this forum and ask these questions not me, but I told him I would this time.

If he is just starting out he will probably be with a trainer for at least a few weeks, once he gets out of driving school. There are several carriers where most seem to start. The major problem all carriers have with inexperienced drivers is insurance. The big carriers are the only ones who can usually afford to take the hit on premiums. In fact, most self insure up to a certain level.

Some do start out running team freight. Many prefer having someone in the truck with them. Others may not want to be that close with another driver once they get out of training.

He needs to come on the forum and ask questions that he needs to be answered. It is much better to get information first hand rather than through someone else. It is good that you want to help him. He needs to have realistic expectations about the job and what will be required of him as an otr driver. He will usually spend 2-3 weeks out, especially in the beginning. Some manage to get drivers home weekly, but those carriers usually want drivers with some experience. It can be a good career for those who are adaptable.
