Hi guys. My brother works for ups and said right now they're hiring drivers off the street. I obtained a cdl back in june of 2018 and I haven't used it since. My driving record was too bad back then but now it has cleared up. I dont know if ups or any company would even accept my cdl as valid. I am afraid of getting back into a big truck again. One thing I hated in training was all the shifting. I was pretty good at it but I'd much rather have an automatic. That way I can focus on driving and handling the rig rather than up shifting or down shifting at the right rpm. What do you guys think? What should I do?

Two things. @Chinatown can recommend companies and probably ones with autoshifts. Needs to know where you live to help with that.

But secondly, if you are not comfortable with shifting, you need to get comfortable with it. Because if you are nervous on the road you are gonna cause accidents. That is no matter what vehicle you are driving. But with a big rig you will most likely kill someone, not just harm them. If you are scared, it might not be the job for you.

I think Western Express uses auto's and has a refresher course.
This company also hires drivers with a less than stellar background.
    Western Express

With headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee, Western Express operates 7 terminals across the U.S., stretching from Maine to California.

you darned well had better drive, and get back into a manual shift vehicle. you can not and SHOULD NOT depend on any job with an automatic being a "Forever JOB", if you take into consideration what's going on nowadays with this virus.

what's to say that if you go and get an automatic trans driving job, and this virus blows up again in a few months, and you get laid off, or the company closes?

there is nothing to it, shifting a truck, to me, you are trying to find excuses, as you stated that..."you are afraid to drive"....

that right there, speaks volumes about you.

Sounds like you have a lot of ego invested in moving a lever attached to the floor.

I don’t even know I’m shifting through the gears anymore.
I’m just focused on my mirrors and also what’s happening in front and around me.
When I finally get up to cruise speed I say to myself “look at that I’m in high gear how did that happen “? Lol.
40 years and counting of rowing through the gears...
