I've had companies call me as soon as I hit the send button. That's a red flag to me.
Might be a couple days a couple weeks or never -

The first thing a company will do is run a DAC check on you. I think most companies will attempt to secure your signature before doing this. DAC has your DMV information in it if you have got a CDL and have drove before. If after this the company is still interested they will contact you to come to orientation and bring all documents needed. I have seen this done in less then 24 hours and I've seen it take two weeks. Three to four working days being the average. Edited to add this. Something that can tie your application up is that ten year employment history. FMCSA rules dictate they do this. Every single person I know that had problems taking over a week the company was having problems verifying employment.

Quality carriers took 4 months to get back to me.
Altough they did have a 3rd party company contact me within a couple days asking back ground and employment questions. And then nothing from June till QC called me in late Oct. This was 2013. -
sounds to me like they had some time to talk with you. -

They just needed a little bit of constant calling to reach them. orientation scheduled yay.

Like it has been said it all depends.
Some have this notion that jobs, especially at trucking companies, are jobs needed to be filled. That may or may not be the case. Often times these trucking companies are filling out one quota or another in taking applications. They are just keeping the office wheels turning. There may be no job at all. They may be waiting for their high turnover to empty enough trucks. They may be waiting on a dedicated contract to be resigned. They may have filled their hiring quota. They may have already filled their orientation for the next couple months. They may have just lost a big contract and now have too many drivers. What I am say is don't count on these companies for nothing. Keep putting out applications until you find a job that satisfies you. If you are really interested in a company keep in constant contact or move on immediately. You would think some kind of loyalty to the company is appreciated; that is not the case. In most of these companies, it is seen as a weakness. - Call up, find out, then move on.
