According to my volvo tech (I know. Different vehicle), if you're seeing smoke out of an exhaust, something is wrong with the system. Even possibly a cracked DPF. Or a loose clamp.

I ended up going to get my filter replaced and had the guy replace pretty much all the sensors while he was at it. I wish I had done that from the beginning because it has ran well since. If I ever get a new used truck the first thing I'm going to do is take it to my new mechanic and have him change and replace them to save on headaches and money on the road.

While it seems no one follows the required maintenance schedule. According to Cummins, the DPF and SCR (if installed) are supposed to be serviced every 150,000 miles. Basically cleaning the system.

When I had mine done inflation hadn't doubled the price on many parts and labor yet so I just had him replace it. It was maybe $150ish more but I don't remember the exact numbers to just buy a new one instead of having it cleaned.

Great advice as I had the same experience. If ever getting used all will be replaced right away. Once one goes out they all tend to fail within 6 months.

Just had mine cleaned for the first time at 420k miles, wish I would have done it sooner but, too late now...

I'm not in the truck but almost 100% positive they recommend 500k in my manual...

Not that I ever go with anything they recommend but for some reason I waited longer than I should have...

Anyhow on my OTR reset tool ( with app ) it showed my filter was at 77% full when I had it cleaned two weeks ago...

My mechanic said that you should never let the percentage get above 50% as it becomes harder if not impossible to get all the BS completely cleaned out then...

    It's cleaned now, running great...

Mechanic also recommended that he would only let it go another 150k before buying a new filter...

My truck has APU so never idle....

    Siinman Thanks this.

My company truck just got the “Aftertreatment Problem”. De rated so its off to the shop. First time this happened and at 760,000 Km but likely this will be the first maintenance of any sort on the emissions system

Hopefully that means the manufacturers have really figured out the best way to do the aftertreatment garbage.
