I stopped to take a brake. I noticed an airline to the left front brake canister was broken, just flopping around. If this happened shouldn't my brake for that tire came on? I didn't feel anything or no air loss. Can someone explain why?

Front brakes do not have the spring brake like drives and trailer axles. The only time your steers brake is when you push your pedal. My guess is it ought to pull hard hard to the opposite side when you do apply your brakes.

Service chambers only use air when braking, spring brakes need air to release. You probably didn't feel a pull because such a large air leak didn't hold enough pressure in the steering line to allow the right right to do much.

You better get that fixed pdq. 2 reasons-your braking system is compromised. When you step on your brake pedal, your air is going to go down super fast, buzzer comes on, then the maxis. Also, should you continue long enough like that to actually make it to being checked by a DOT you'll both be out of service and get a big ticket. I know there's no such thing as a stupid question, but, really. Part of being a professional big rig driver, is a basic understanding of how your air brake system works. You'd have had to pass some sort of exam to get through your air endorsement for your licence. I'd strongly recommend you do some brushing up on air brake systems.

Racer62. Did you not take a air brake course to get your license??

This is is all part of being a professional driver.
There is no maxi pots on a steer axle, so your not going to have a brake come on.
And no air loss while driving because your not driving with your foot on the brake pedal.

Even coming to a stop you probley won't hear the air escaping over the engine noise. Most trucks have a automatic limiting valve on the steer axle. The brakes on steer don't get full presure till after 30-40 psi brake application.
Regurdless , find out why the airline is broken. They just don't break for no reason.
Its very important to have the braking system up to spec and shouldn't be taken lightly.

Remember when we didn't have to worry about steer axle brakes?
