I can't speak for Alberta, but in Sask it was multiple choice when I took it in 2016; I think it would be a reasonably same assumption that the AB test would be also.

Probably doesn't help you but Ontario it's multiple choice and you will be advised of how many you have answered incorrectly after each questions is answered.

Mine was in 2016, in SK, and it was old school.........pencil and paper.

What's class 1Z? Is that something new?
I imagine it'd be multiple choice on computer. I wrote my class 3 and class 1 tests on the computer at the registries office. Can't see why air brakes would be any different. -

I'm sure you could demand the paper test on religious grounds since the drivers test is available in about a dozen foreign languages. I did mine 2 years ago, it was electronic.Macneil Thanks this.
