if return lines are bad, could they cause air to get in fuel?

They shouldn't should they? They use the same inlet/outlet you would use if it was heated with coolant, instead of return fuel. That return line should be under pressure, no? So it would spray fuel, not draw air in, if it's picking up air it would be in the head or before.

Yes return will not be able to cause air in fuel.

Same amount of air as return line, but not a hell of a lot.

As for the other question, the check valve prevents any air returning to the head anyways. It's about 18" from the head. I suppose there could be a problem anywhere before that.

I had that problem as well. Turned out the fuel #### off valves were bad. I have a 2003 freightliner xl classic. There were two shut ofd valves under the bunk. I didn't even know they were there.

I just took the valves out amd ran a straight line. Problem was solved.

I have a 60 series with a davco filter runs the same when its cold an u can smell the fuel when it gets warm goes away. The colder the temperature the more it smokes I think its in the fuel system. Hopefully when u find the problem u will post the solution.

Not the ECM or programming. Back to air in fuel. They're going to look at the check valve and fuel lines on the back of the head.

Check valve is ok. He wants to take out the injectors and pop test them but I already did that. Also find it hard to believe a brand new set of injectors are having the same issue as my old set of injectors.

I think that it is a fuel problem because one day last winter i gave it a shot of either to see an it ran fine till the either burned than started smoking again

Yeah I'm thinking it is as well. Problem is, just about everything has been changed. Other than replacing everything again, I don't know how to test certain items.
