I have a 5EK Cat series and the air compressor pumps over 120 and keeps going when its cold. Once it warms up about 15 or so minutes later, it runs normal. I've replace the governor with a brand new one and bypass my air dryer and still have the problem. I've been told to check the overloader assembly which sits on top of the compressor but I havent yet. Could it be the overloader assembly or something else ? And can anything in the air system be damage with to much air being pump ?

I had to replace my pressure signal line from my air tanks to my governor because of a similar issue. A plugged spot in the line made it sometimes slow to respond both in kicking in and out. Although if my memory serves me correct I did not figure this out until after i replaced 2 governors, an air dryer, and made Cummins warranty a compressor.

What he said ^^^ 2 years ago my return line froze up and my compressor took me up to 150 +. The signal line tells the compressor to shutoff ,if it's plugged up the compressor ain't stopping till you blow your relief valve.

You may need to throw an unloader kit into that compressor. Sounds like the problem.Diesel Dave and dibstr Thank this.

The pop off valve should prevent any damage and u descibe symtoms of needing an unloader kit.Not very expensive and u can do it yourself.Good Luck
dibstr and Diesel Dave Thank this. -
If the unloaders are the problem remove the air intake to the compressor and build the pressure up till it unloads, shut it off, if there is air leaking into the intake the unloaders are done and need a kit. I use an adapter and shop air to test the compressor. Also remove the air line to the governor from the wet tank you can tell if it is restricted. By the air flow. If in doubt take off the line to the fan solinoid, as a test.

I had the same problem it was a piece of rubber blocking the inside of the signal line where it goes on the governor

Finally bought the unloader kit, installing it tomorrow, will update later.

We have a w900 that has always unloaded at 130psi. Has been that way for years...no problems. Although all the rest are at or around 120 to 125. Like oneshot said...popoff valve will pop before you ever have any damage. We use shop air also to find problems. Built an adaptor to test our fan clutches. Seems like we have done a few here lately. Fans wouldn't disengage. Had bad oring. I think I could rebuild one in my sleep now. lol. Good fan clutch would disengage with about 40psi...these would take between 85 and 105psi to disengage...and you could here the leak in the clutch. Used the air regulator on our dryer to test.
