OK, so it's time to ask my monthly dumb question, so here goes....

If I want to put train horns that you see for sale at truck stops, on my truck, can they be a direct replacement to my stock air horns or do I need to add another compressor and all that jazz?:biggrin_25520:

Belive me, truck air system perfomance is enought for any horn ore 2-3 horns you will find at truck stop... I hope you will not use horn from sea container hauler (LOL, I just try to imagine VERY loud horn, everyone and you are scared, horn dump all air and you stop where you apply horn till compressor refill air system...).

your air system will handle any horn--if you are frame mounting the horn--you can run another supply, with a lever actuator-that would leave your stock system as it is
there are probabely unused ports on a tank you could use--or you can t into another line that has constant pressure or even at the firewall there are probabely unused ports as well

(Thread derailment alert) A buddy of mine gave me a set of train horns after his truck burned, but I never put them on, partially because I wondered if a picky DOT man might say it's not legal. Anybody have any thoughts on the legality of replacing the stock horn with a set of train horns?

"Actual" train horns are only legal on trains. The truck stop ones just sound like em!!

The ship horns like Pablo said would get some 4 wheeler's attention quick!!

I hate 'em... too many idiots think it's funny to blow 'em late at nite in a truck stop.

One night on US169 I was running in a pack of several trucks and one idiot decided to blow the horns right at a RR crossing... three of us hit the brakes and we #### near crashed trying to stop for the crossing... real funny.

It's not illegal to have train horns, it's illegal to blow them. I've had a set of Leslie horns for years and probably only use them maybe 2 times a year. The ones at the truck stops are NOTHING like the real ones. But I also have the stock horns for an inspection. Train horns are like engine brakes and straight pipes, no one notices unless you abuse them.

You will not replace your stock horns with train horns, the small OEM valve and 1/4" lines are no where near big enough. You might get by with the truckstop ones using factory stuff.

Like JFaulk said, a real set will basically suck all your air when you blow them. Or I should say it will take all the air you have to get them to blow....lol
