First post as I can’t find an answer anywhere. Bought a 2022 Peterbilt 389 factory day cab sight unseen as it had what I thought was the exact specs I wanted. Factory day cab, long hood, 235 wb, x15 565 hp and 18 speed, disc brakes all around, loaded, 300k miles. Only thing I grazed right past is I thought it was air leaf suspension. Nope. Air trac suspension. All my old trucks were air leaf or my other 389s are flex air.
This truck looks like a monster truck. Front leafs have 3.5 blocks. And I know nothing about the air trac suspension other than it sits higher than anything else.

Is there a simple answer or solution to convert to air leaf or low air leaf? My dream would be remove blocks in the front and then swap main brackets and leafs out with air leaf rear brackets. Then realign etc. Is it that easy? Or is that nowhere close to possible?
Also was hoping to do an air ride front end kit but that’s out the window until I figure out how to get the rear suspension sorted out and much lower. Thanks in advance!

The front is easy, like you said, just take the blocks out.
But the rear is a different story. If you’re looking to go to the air leaf/lo air set up, you will likely need to pull out both of your differential housings. The leaf springs are shaped differently, and you will likely need to replace the blocks that are welded onto your differential housings that the leaf spring sets in. To me, that’s the most difficult part.

And then, yes, you will need all new brackets, pivot bushings, springs, airbags, shocks, possibly shock mount brackets.

it would be easier in my opinion to locate a cut off suspension that has the set up you’re looking for, and then simply splice the frame, then all you need to deal with is possibly driveshaft length and air and electric lines.

Whats wrong with the Air Trac? Petes heaviest duty air suspension. Been around for 55 years. Tried and true. Air springs last 20 plus years. Wont cause your frame to crack behind the crossmember under the fifth wheel either like low air does. You just looking for the lowrider look?

Yes I agree on durability and strength. The ride height is just too high for my application. The hood and frame sits over 6” higher than all my other trucks. The battery box step is around 8” on the other trucks and this one the step is 17” off the ground that’s nuts. I’m not tall and that’s a hell of an annoyance really.

I gotcha. The old Petes sit real high. Bottom steps are 21” to 24” with 24.5’s. This one was specked with heavier capacity stacked front springs and step sits 24”. I built the bottom step on both sides for it 25 years ago. It sits at 14” high. Much more comfortable.

Air Trac is rough riding, my truck is air Trac and I strongly dislike it, not gonna say hate, because off road work it's kinda nice, but since I don't do off road stuff anymore we will keep with strongly dislike. The one thing I definitely would add to air Trac is the hard plastic tabs between the spring and the wear pad, it greatly improves the ride when you are light on the drives. I can't remember the name of them but it is probably the best add on i have ever done to the truck
