Alaska?

i'd like to go up there some day. but i'll probably fly up there.

i don't have a passport yet. and certainly don't want to deal with canada and there rules and permits.

 

If you have never driven in the NWT, you have missed something very special. Like Vision says, lake Kulane is beautiful winter or summer. In winter make sure and know where your fuel stops are as they are few. Also be prepared for temps that drop to -50 or more. On winter trips, I love to get out at night, shut off the engine and take in the northern lights both visually and audibly because they also sing.

 

Don't you mean Yukon Territory? Would be a little off route to go up through the Northwest Territories. lol

 

Depends on which route you take, one passes through both NWT and Yukon and the other through Yukon.

 

Correct myself, thinking of a trip I made to Nahanni one time (not by truck). You are correct, mostly Alberta, or British Columbia and Yukon.

 

I just drove a side dumper from Devils Lake ND to Anchorage via Spokane to get some mechanical work done.
It was quite the adventure that is for sure.
It was like a 3500 mile roller coaster ride. The ride from Watson Lake to just south of Tok may as well been a dirt road with as rough as it was.
Be sure and plan your fuel stops as a lot of the places are card locked so you have to know where you can get fuel from that does not stop the fuel after a $100.
I had a small 120 Gal tank so I had to stop a lot more then normal.
The only permit I needed was a $35 fuel permit.
I missed all the weigh stations except for Watson lake and Whitehorse.
I would definitely do it again.
Carlisle In Anchorage just announced they will be going from Washington state to Anchorage now so Maybe you could get on that run.

 

I love trucking thru BC and the Yukon.... been in summer and winter. last december it was -65 but the roads are great when snow packed..Alaska is always on my mind now that I've been there.

 

Never hauled freight there nor have I driven there. But I been to Alaska many times and loved it there. I am lucky to have been to places many never ever get to go. Kiska Island. All different Japanese equipment left after the WWII. Dutch Harbor, Adak (many Navy Guys may been there) All the Fishing Vessels you see on Deadest Catch, I seen in real life out at sea.

Weather in Alaska if you do not like it wait 15 minutes it will change.. Would I love to go back there? Yes I would..

Be prepared to buy Alaska plates at the DMV for $600+ for the year or you can buy temporary 90 day plates.

 

I might want to take a run one day, but you have to be prepared. TWIC card/ passport, carefully planned fuel stops and money for them, permits to travel through various parts of B.C., spare everything including food, etc. Does anyone have or can anyone make a checklist of things to do/ have before a run to Alaska?
