I was told at least in Ontario that it was a condensed pretrip so the tester did not have to spend hours which each person who was testing. Here you do open the hood but only to check the air dryer, compressor and governor were secure plus the brake adjustment level (on one tire).

I had to do a blind side back in around docked vans on my road test. Apparently the driving school was in transition and their normal area to do a left side back up was under construction. Lucky me. To make matters worse, there was a giant snow pile on my drivers side, which meant I had to watch how i swung the tractor around or I'd end up in that. Good times. Took 2 tries on the road test.
I was also told with the backup that I could get out and look every foot if I wanted to.
My Pretrip was also done with the hood closed but I told the examiner all the things I would look at on each side as if the hood were open.
Someone mentioned hill park, I did not have to do that, just a hill start. -
No opening the hood. 2 tries to back up and you get 1 pull ahead each time. Had to back blindside in. Tester didn't like the airbrake pretrip, went off my air brake course list and was supposed to be by the drivers book. Break the trailer lines first and you don't do a reservoir leak test. My 3 was more involved than the 1, mind you coming from a 5 they must make sure you can handle a bigger vehicle etc.
