A lot of us spent lots of $$$$ to get trained many years before MELT was even in discussion.

They usually do a grandfather provision when these are rolled out. Drivers with over so many years would be automatic, drivers under that but can show X many days, months, years of active driving would be included.
Probably it’s in response to the carnage and out right dangerous driving common on the roads.
They need to crack down on license mills that still exist. Even with the new MELT program, there are still many schools willing to take extra cash for them to hand out graduation certificates.

Probably on the wrong forum, but does anybody know how this scheme will affect somebody on a temporary visa working as a trucker and using the skilled experience from it to get PR?

Not someone who underestimates the learning involved in the job btw, nor would I just be doing it to get PR. Genuinely love the idea of trucking but it’s a sickener to pay 10k to learn and ultimately not have enough skilled experience after 2.5 years and have to go home.

Probably too early to tell, they are just developing the program and associated policies for it.

Give Alberta Transportation a call and ask them. You will probably get the same answer, but maybe not.
