If in doubt about climbing a hill, chain up.

When descending an icy hill, use your fricking brakes, that's what they are for. A nice light application on all your axles keeps everything nice and smooth/equal...

Somehow some guys have this idea in their heads that they can/should ? hold back a heavy load with only their jake retarding the drives...This is why trucks jacknife, all the axles braking equally is a much better way to drive in adverse conditions. A nice 5/10 PSI app is perfect on these hills, keeps everything on the same page...

Nate, electronic engines don't really lock up, they might slow down before the low idle cuts out the jake...

Before electronic engines our jakes would stall our engines and we would lose power steering, we would have to grab neutral, restart, find a gear and get slowed up for whatever we started jakeing for in the firstplace 0_o

Well when we drove junk sometimes the primitive brake valves would just lock up the trailer or the truck too so... I can remember hauling trailers without spring brakes when empty without air lines hooked up so the trailer would stay behind me if I needed to touch the brakes ;)

Sigh .... I remember when I had an Exhaust Brake. (A baffle that stopped the flow of exhaust)

i get around just fine in my 1996 miata or`1998 cherokee, both with hakkapellitas

and the cherokee is NEVER in 4wd at any time on a highway.

4wd is only good for getting you further into the ditch when you crash cuz you were goin too fast.

Older M-1cummins in a body job vac truck. Heading towards Ft.Nelson from Helmet on the high grade. The tires locked up due to the make and yes the engine did stall. Sliding down the "road" at about a 45 degree angle to my direction of travel and a hard left turn in front of me, frantically trying to fire it back up. Come pretty close.to needing fresh shorts that time. Very rare for electronic Jake's to kill the engine but it happened me that time

A few logging trucks still use the quarter in the glad-hand to keep the trailer from meeting you on the way down the hill.
