Good god if you are on a 10,12,24 hr break and can't refuse the urge to have a beer. Please for the safety of everyone GET A NEW JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Save the beer drinking for hometime when you know you won't have to driver for 3 plus days.
Just this morning here in Atlanta a log truck hydroplaned into the median on 285 west. Wait let me rephrase that he barrelled through the concrete median. Shutting down traffic going east and west for almost 10 hrs while the mess was cleaned up. And guess what he admitted to the cops that he had 1 beer w/ his dinner last night on his 11 hr break. Now he is getting lots of rest time in the Fulton County Jail!
Didn't everyones parents tell them when they were in their late teens one thing you NEVER do is DRINK AND DRIVE! Takes a couple days to get out of your system completely. And god forbid something happened like it did hear today. Is a couple beers worth your job or someone else's life? -
I have read 392.5 more then once and it clearly states that you can not drink or be under the influence of alcohol while on duty. Does not state anywhere that you can not drink alcohol while on the road, off duty but, does state must have not consumed any alcohol 4hrs prior to going on duty. I personally would not consume a min of 8hrs prior. I am not trying to start anything here but the facts must be clear when giving anyone advice. If anyone can find where it states that you can not consume alcohol while off duty, please post it clearly. I like to drink a bear, a bear, or two every once in a while. That is my business but if I am violating the law I still want to know.
I have been at a truck stop on a 34hr restart with a dozen guys, standing between two trucks, drinking bear and having a cookout. A police officer pulled up because the TS said we were being too loud. He did not have a problem at all that we were drinking, just told us to tone the noise down. -

You might want to review the company handbook. Many companies have strict alchohol rules. -
Keep it out of the truck. If you know you're going to be sitting for a while and want to knock a few back, your best bet is to get a hotel room. Make sure you've slept it off well before getting back into the truck. As long as your blood alcohol level is clean you'll be fine.
Roadmedic Thanks this. -
I thought it was up to the State whether or not alcohol is allowed in the vehicle. It's not something I would take a chance with anyway. -

What's the law on DUI for CDL truckers? I've heard it's .04 if you are driving a 26,000 lb or more vehicle but what if your license is a CDL and you get pulled over on hometime in your personal vehicle? Is it .08 then? I'm in GA.

Probably has been mentioned before, but when I worked for a major oil company as a driver, we were cautioned about certain brands of cough syrup, as well as the NyQuil types of medicines. They may contain alcohol, and even some over the counter stuff USED to contain small amounts of codeine. (do not know if it is allowed nowadays).
Supposedly enough quantity in some to show in a drug/alcohol test.
