The Series Sixty is a good all round engine.Decent power, fuel mileage, dependable and easy to get parts when needed.I still prefer Cummins, though.
The old Detroits-any "V" series-useless pieces of underpowered JUNK-designed with the intent of taking their owners to the poorhouse in a hurry.I remember getting instructions on driving my first 8V71 318 Detroit-"get in the truck, slam the door on your hand to p### you off, then try your best to blow it up." They sure did scream, weren`t going anywhere ,but sounded good doing it.
All this talk about Cats....

I've heard that Detroit Big truck truck drivers have a good sense of humor.
Is that true?

SOUNDS nice, must have a huge turbo on it, LOOKS kinda silly spewing all that raw fuel out the pipes into the air. Back In The Day we thought white smoke at startup and lotsa black smoke when you mashed on it was cool and that was how you made power baby. I did it with 1693s, 3406 and 3408 Cats, KT and big cam Cummins and 8V and 12V Detroits at one time or another. Can't say I ever had a strong 6-71.
None of 'em got any fuel mileage and they all ran good. We did that overfueling crap back when we didn't know any better, but now we do know better. I think.

Back in the day with a non-turboed engine, overfueling was the only to get power. Even the turboed engines responded well to overfueling. I have seen quite a few NH-250s with a cherry red exhaust and flame out the stack. These engines smoked like a pine knot, but ran good.
You turned up the pump or put a stinger in and watched the water temperature. Remember when many trucks had a spot mirror just to watch the stack. I had a 250 that would run, but smoked like crazy when mashed. The old 1693-425 Cats woulld smoke like crazy with each gear change, so would the old 300 Mack engines behind a 5 spd Mack transmission.
The electronics on todays engines will change settings during operation to make power but keep smoke down. That is one good thing about the ECM engines. They can't be turned up by just anyone, but they run much more efficient.
I remember the days when you could barely see the back of a trailer of a truck going up a hill from the smoke. This is from a Cummins non-turbo 855 ci engine than evolved into the N-14 that would pull like crazy because of electroincs and innovation.VARITHMS Thanks this. -

Your able to play around with the 2005 "vaccum cleaner" detriots too? any cheap tricks some of us could do on our own to get power?
