you want to see some difficult alley backing, go to Downtown Chicago. I remember long time ago, back down alley , dock is flush against the wall, impossible to back into, they put 2 green dumpster right by my back doors, and through sheet metal in the top, pull the pallet jack fast, pulling the skid right across the 2 dumpsters into the building. I said first sign the bill, because if they fall through into the dumpster, there your s to dig out. It worked.

you don't kneed the dumb formulas and so called set up crap, just look where you have to put it and do it. my main concerns with alleys is the escalators the black one right above you. some are low.

Here is the entire problem with truck driving schools and training; Instead of teaching how to back up and steer a trailer we have a "formula to pass the test."

So when you guys are at that grocery warehouse with tons of room, you know why you have to wait 45 minutes for some mega driver to back up. Only to see him after you park and check in alongside his trainee arguing with the guy who's truck he just hit.

I have no idea what formulas they use, not a clue. Look where the trailer has to go, put the darn thing in . Not rocket formula science.

While I agree with you but that probably won't work to pass his test. Yes after you pass and get out in the real world but in order to get there 1st he's gotta follow the dumb b.s. formula what ever that may be

make sure you are far out, but not so far out you interfere with the cone line on your right side.

As somebody that has performed this backing maneuver thousands of times it is a fact worrying about that pivot point is like taking 50 words to say a comment that only needs 10. However there is not a single person in this forum that was born being able to do it in their sleep. It can be scary as hell being over 60 feet away and watching your trailer coming within inches of that other truck or trailer parked next to you. It is a fact these 53 footers have a delay and finding these pivot points help with mastering this. I will give a student worrying over doing the alley dock their due. Learn the pivot point. However over time your going to start being more concerned about hitting that dock more then getting out and walking off that pivot point.Until you get that CDL you should be doing these things just how you are taught because the examiner during your road test will be expecting you to do it that way. However once you get that CDL you really need to shift that focus to sighting that trailer and not hitting things.

what the heck is a pivot point, and an EXAMINIATOR, sounds like a freakin doctor. You young kids out there just need to practice. And when you back in to a difficult spot, which I hear none of you say, don't open your back doors till you line up, oh oh, technical term, line up, how do we put that word in a technical term. and scary, ha, ha, ha.
How many years experience does this so called EXAMINATOR have, anything under 15 years, you know NOTHING.

when I started driving, a driver, much older than I at the time, says " Take this trailer, put it in that dock over there" , He would just stand there and watch, then walk away, and later say to me " Keep practicing" I did, I cant tell you how many times I was in the yard and just kept trying. you will get to a point, not pivot point, but it will come natural to back in. It takes PRACTICE, not no tech terms, trying to do math. terms to get good at it. never in my life have I heard such nonsense using tech. terms. that's all its going to do is confuse a driver.
