I have almost a year recent Class A experience and last year decided to try switching to Yard Spotter for my company. I'm deciding if I should stick with it or get back in a sleeper cab. I wondered if there are better opportunities out there for spotting. I've heard some low opinions on companies like Laserspot.

I'm also intrested in moving South and I want to leave my current job because the yards are in very poor condition with huge potholes. Aside from that, I do like being home everyday, but I don't want to wreck my back doing this job. I'm also tired of getting a yard truck through the Wisconsin snow even up through April.

I prefer 2nd shift if that matters.

Here's a couple spotter/yard dog jobs with 24 hour operations.
Greatwide in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. They have an account at the Associated Grocers warehouse there. Goodlettsville is on the North side of Nashville and is part of Metro Nashville.

Aldi has a big distribution facility in Mt. Juliet, TN just on the East side of Nashville.

If you go to Tennessee you will get a substantial raise by losing your state income tax, Tennessee has no state income tax.

Try googling "Yard Jockey" at whatever location your interested in. Indeed.com or Glass door should give you plenty of options to look into.

Or look for ANY distribution center around your area...such as grocery distribution centers, Nestle, Dean Foods or ANY food distributor. Logistics companies, railyards and ports, etc. They ALL will have Jockey positions.

If there's an Amazon Fulfillment Center around the area your interested in, give them a shot. They just got rid of contracting Jockeys and are hiring they're own in-house Jockeys. Pay is around $18.50 to start.

Companies like JB Hunt DCS are contracted for dedicated accounts and they'll also have Jockey positions too for whoever they're contracted for.

But the best Jockey positions are probably with Private fleets that have they're own in-house Jockey positions... such as Costco, UPS, USPS, Dean Foods, Bimbo Bakeries, ACME, SuperValu, Publix, etc. They're usually part of they're bid runs and get paid the same too. UPS and USPS Yard Jockeys make well over $80k a year.

Thanks for the feedback. I have looked at places closer to me such as Ryder in Green Bay that have bad reviews and a lot of people seemed down on Laserspot. I was starting to wonder if many of these jobs have poor management or are locked up with low paying contractors. I also hear weird stories about Amazon, but maybe those apply more to inside the warehouse.

Another thing I wonder about is expected moves per shift. It's hard to gauge how fast I could go because my current facility is so damaged I can't drive fast unless I want to get bounced out of my seat. There is also poor lighting and most of the marking on the docks to guide me are worn away or missing.

I might explore some of those in-house companies even if it sounds like employees climbing the ladder get first shot at them. I have a general positive impression of Costco and Publix as companies and I've been to Costco warehouses many times.

It puts more burden on tourists, and can lessen it on residents. I like the idea, means growing your own food and doing your own work becomes doubly profitable.
