Almost made a bad mistake...

    I went back and read your original post again. You're right I did miss the part where they are up against the HOS threshold. Not a great sign in my book either.

    And to the other guy, of course they can inspect you for any reason they choose. D'uh. Never said they couldn't. I said they WON'T because there are too many companies with high CSA numbers. Like I said, do a check on some MC numbers and you'll see what I mean.

    Now, you have to understand how they arrive at these CSA scores. First, in a small company, one bad driver might well be responsible for 75% of that score all by himself over a period of a couple of months and maybe he doesn't even work there anymore. Second, maybe they were all general form and manner violations. Third, maybe the bulk of the violations were received in the last month or two, which means the points are multiplied by 3....in a couple of months they will drop by 33%.

    I am not defending high CSA scores, but you need to understand they are more common that many people will have you believe.

    As for the job hopping argument. I don;t buy it. I've read lots of resumes and I can tell you if a driver left a company because they got shut down by the FMCSA, I wouldn't hold it against him.

    I guess it just depends on how bad off you are at your current job. By all means, stay where you are, lower your standard of living like the guy that knows so much suggested. Or, find a company with low CSA score (good luck) and stay out on the road for 4 weeks at at stretch and potentially ruin your life. Your call.

    I would welcome loose leaf logbooks, if the company runs good equipment! To me, that is the most important thing.

    "I" know when I am tired, "I" know when I need to shut it down and get some sleep. Eff the government telling me when I am fatigued or not.

    Give me a good truck that will run and I will get the load there on time, be safe while doing it, and I'll make the logs look good at the end of the day.

    I don't need some pencil-necked geeks in Washington telling me how to run a truck safely! My God, this country has gone to Hell in a handbasket.

    Where is the American Spirit? You know, that old "can do" thingie?

    OOOOOOhhhhhhh, I might get a ticket!!!!

    Just did a load search on DAT.....

    Mercer has been over the HOS threshold for as long as they have records.
    Landstar has been over the HOS threshold since Sept 2012.

    Last I checked, they weren't shut down.

    ur preaching to the choir bud but there are WAY to many do gooders on here that are gonna tell you that if u falsify by 15 minutes ur gonna kill someone and ur gonna get caught no if's and's or but's and they're gonna call u a super trucker i've given up trying to tell convince them elogs and more goverment control are NOT the answer but they never listen. I do what i gotta do out here to make a good living will i get caught maybe someday but it hasnt happend yet i sleep when im tired and i drive when im not if wanna stop and eat dinner at a place i saw on tv or check out a new chrome shop or even just take a nap because i got the flu and am tired i will be ####ed if some lines of a computer screen are gonna tell me what im gonna do

    Hey, I used to average out speed and shave 15 minutes or so to get to a customer or a truckstop for the night. That was the extent of my fudging though. I never ran 2 log books or did other blatant lying on my logs. If trying to run legal as the system is currently set up make me a do gooder, then so be it.

    I never said I was a fan of how the HOS is set up either, but it is what it is, and I try to run as the law indicates.

    Great subject to post about. I don't know anything about thresholds, but I just go to the FMCSA website and use "Company Snapshot". Once you find the company you can see all kinds of information. I looked up abc trucking to show you an example but you may already know this.

    If you click on the picture to enlarge it, you can see, they have a Vehicle Out of Service percentage of 50% while the National Average is 20.72%. Their Drivers are 25% higher then the national average for being OOS. I am sure that DOT would have a company like this in their "Flag File". Like I said, I don't know anything about thresholds but it seems like if you have a 50/50 shot at being put out of service, then something is "amiss". Hope this helps. Drive Safe.

    Multiple thanks! THIS is what I was searching for, the national averages in addition to the thresholds. It actually allows one to compare the company's score using a realistic benchmark (at least for me). Thanks again.
