We know before all alternators had brushes. The lifespan of brushes were ~100k miles. Then Delco started making brushless alternators for trucks. Looks like now we are going back to brushed alternators. New materials of brush-ring pair allowing alternator go beyond 500k miles. Brushed alternator has higher output when engine is idling, small sized, light, fuel saver and it's twice cheaper. New Cascadias (and almost all Freightliner branded trucks) are coming with brushed Delco alternators installed. Bosch has Long Haul line of brushed alternators. Volvo trucks also have brushed alternators now.

Seems to me, we use to repair alternators that had brushes. Now we just trade in the core.
    Might be cheaper to maintain.

yes. it's not brushless. it's brushed alternator. All new trucks comes with this alternator(or equivalent). Mostly 200A rated. Brushes are made from new materials and they last very long. No need for external fan.

The brush/brushless thing may or may not be good; I'd want to see them put a replacement set on the counter so I could see how hard they are to replace early, which I would likely do because I'd rather do it when I choose to, given what roadside repairs can cost.

If they had them I'd probably buy them along with the alternator.

They have two internal fans and function as any other alternator. Not much special about them. They dont last much longer. The conceived to make a product cheaper and lighter that your happy to pay more for. That's all they have accomplished.

could be. Have you used them ? I had before(more than 10 years) 28SI but it was a different alternator, different look. Lasted 180k miles.

Why rebuild them. There cheap enough and last long enough. Just replace when needed. Heck , for 250 bucks carry a spare.
