    The eye of the storm....

Last Thursday, my mentally handicapped uncle went to the doctor so he could get a refill on his blood pressure medication.

My aunt picked up the meds from the pharmacy last Saturday.

Last night, completely by accident, she discovered that the WRONG MEDICATION had been dispensed!

I don't mean switching a generic for a brand name, or something in the same family, I mean COMPLETELY the wrong medication!!!!

Instead of 100mg of metopropolol (sp), a blood pressure med, they had dispensed 1000mg of METFORMIN, a diabetes medication! And he had been taking them twice a day for a week!!

I got the whole mess straightened out, and it was an error at the pharmacy, but the moral of the story is this:

Beofre you leave you doctors office, KNOW what you are supposed to be picking up at the drug store. Have the doc write it down for you if you have to.

The only person guarding your health, and the health of your loved ones is YOU!

I've had something similar happen to me several times at a nationwide pharmacy chain. In fact, at one point two of three successive refills were wrong. Although the bottles were labeled correctly, there were completely wrong pills in one and a higher strength dose in the other. Because they were refills, I questioned the contents as soon as I opened the bottles. Since this was not their first screw-up with our prescriptions, I switched pharmacies.

I'm cautious now -- probably overly cautious. When I pick up a new prescription (not a refill), I ask for the pharmacist, open the bottle, and have him/her confirm that I do indeed have the right pills. I explained the circumstances when I first did it, and they are always very accommodating of my request.
