accounting will be there for you when you return. With your experience it should not be too difficult to land back in that field. If it wont kill you to try then go for it

If you aren't happy working in an office.... give it up. There's nothing worse than being in a J O B where your constantly having to force yourself to go work every morning. Why anybody would go through life dreading work is beyond me... Find a career that makes you happy.

If I were you.... I'd trade the office job for a truck in a heartbeat. If trucking doesn't work out, you can always get back into management. You climbed the ladder once, you can do it again if you have to.

A good book to read concerning careers... Dan Miller-48 Days to the work you love. I've read it and recommend it.

Life's short.... Enjoy it. Don't let the pursuit of money make you miserable your entire working career.

    Best of luck to you.

Not a trucker... just a nosey thread reading opinionated waitress lol..
You actually hate your job that much, time for a change... guessing as an accountant, you have made some wise investments, with that salary, you have a savings/nest egg. Kids are grown so ( at least some) of that expense is gone... your lifestyle will change, so that expense will too, keepin in mind as they said above, the road is costly too.
And no I haven't had to deal with em like the drivers, but they get crabby whiney dispatchers that control their day...showers that dont work, grumpy receivers etc etc
I know, playin both sides here.. grass may be greener, but weeds still grow, still have to mow,and dogs still crap in it;-)
Do what's in your heart.. better for your heart too..

It's like the military, stay in-get out? I had an old wise man tell me once that you stay at your job until you hate to get up and go in. When that time comes, and it sounds like it has for you, you start looking for something else to do.

BUT don't be rash. Be sure to plan your move so no one gets hurt. You know you're going to give up alot of your toys and higher living. When you make 6 figures you spend 6 figures. You won't be anywhere near that in trucking for awhile if ever. So don't think you can just jump over and go OTR and start making 40K a year.

Your frame of mind is going to play a big role here. Don't think for one minute that you will be able to use your mid-level management skills because you'll be starting at the bottom. And someone that has 6 months experience is someone that will be trusted before you. Then the first question you'll ask yourself is why? It's a hard road to take when you give up so much. If it were me I would rearrange my current position to make it tolerable, invest all I could in my future then plan to retire early. After I retire I THEN would go into the trucking business because then I could do it for fun and not struggle just to make a living. Good Luck.

Awesome..as long as you've thought it through then by all means go for it.

I may have said it already but DON'T jump in as an owner op..you probably have the credit rating to do it..but don't right off the bat..save that particular move until down the road a bit Its real hard as an owner to get leased on somewhere out of school and be able to afford a truck payment.

Well sucks to do something you hate that is for sure! You are an accountant, so maybe you can run the figures, but my guess is if you stick it out as an accountant, you could retire at 52, or if you go into trucking you could retire at 62 --- and you would be in the same place finacially. So, if you can hang on for 10 more years, and then start driving a truck in your "retirement" at 52, seems like a great plan. But, you do hate your job so 10 years is a loooooong time. If there is some way you can try it for awhile without quitting your old job that would be ideal I think. Get the CDL on the weekends, get with a company like Werner for 3 or 4 weeks with a trainer, and then if you like it quit the accountant job! Some of us, decided after driving for a few weeks that while we liked the driving part, the entire package was not to our liking. I won't repost my original reasons (Partly because as a quitter, I really don't even belong on this site), but you can click on my name and read my first post. If you don't like trucking (and you might not), where would you be then? It might be real hard to get your old job back.

I'm curious.....will you "transfer" with-in your present company from office management to driver ? Or what ? And, I'll add, you need to be happy while on this planet. Me personally, I've bounced around from job to job, lived in a hundred places, been married 7 times, owned a hundred cars, travelled near and far, while my close friends all have had the same job, lived in the same house, been married to the same woman, only buy a new car every 10 years, hardly ever leave their county.......all I can say is BORING ! No body lays down in the gutter and dies. If you fail, you get up and dust yourself off and go forward, right ? Luck to ya'.
