Yes, when i get to do roll off and not pull the pup its cool. But I am a relief driver. I do all routes and run all trucks. The job isn't that bad on fair weather.y heart just isn't in it, never has been. I did it for my kids that are mostly grown now.

Its still a pup, and you can( generally) lock the front of the trailer tongue so that it doesn't pivot for backing. Going forward the trailer almost follows the exact path of the truck, so no it's not like you have to drive like a tractor/trailer.
I am a relief driver, i drive all types of trucks and know all the routes we service. On any given day i could start at 3:15 am driving a front load truck and by 11am could be on a residential front loader- then at 1 pm i could be doing roll off- mostly i am just tired of wet feet and/or soaked from sweat clothes. Being out in the freezing cold for up to 14 hours a day. And when it snows i am usually out in it for that long. It is also getting very close i feel that because the local haulers have cut the companies throat so badly that I may have to relocate in the next few years if i should stay. But my heart isn't in it anyway if it ever was.makeit Thanks this. -
Makeit, you have no clue what i have been through or how much of my blood and sweat has been poured for WM. I have seen hundreds of people come and go, when i started all the employees took bets that i wouldn't last 30 days-- that was 10 1/2 years ago and none of them are still there. I am not complaining about the job or having one. Its just getting close to time to move on. But even if i do leave it will be 6 to 18 months before i go.

My apologies Makeit, i misread your comment. It does take a ton of heart to do what I do.

What kept me for this long was knowing if i didn't my kids would not eat. They were my strength when i had none.
Here is what I am looking at. I have no property of my own.( i rent) no real chance of saving enough money to buy a house in the near future. And even if I did and actually paid it off( the note) It would never really be mine. Just paying the government taxes on it( renting) for the priveledge to say its mine, but who are we kidding, if I don't pay the taxes, they take it. Is that really owning something? Not to me. So what the real point?
If i leave i walk away from almost a month of paid time off per year. Good pay and benefits. And the ( false) security of having a job.warrior81 Thanks this. -
Yes I have a solid clue on your job I have been in the waste Ind 7 years. I meant no foul means in what I said I simply agreed its a job you have to want to do. As you know the garbage buisness pays well but is tuff work. Like you said we get the false job security and we stick around. I really meant the best of luck to you in your new path.

I'm surprised they route you guys so crazy! here our swing drivers only cover one position a day maybe two but three not for me. I didn't like being a swing driver I pushed for a route and got lucky after only a few months

Makeit, I realized when i reread your post what you meant. I don't know where you started or how your company runs their trucks. I will tell you that even the guys that started in the last 5 years at my location, don't have a solid clue. Most days i only do one route. But I have done 2 full routes and helped 3 others in one day before. Even last week i did a front load route and when i got back to the yard i was sent out to cover a driver who had to leave on family emergency. ( 750) stops. Yay me!!

It's quite a bit different than 10 years ago. It's changed since I've been here. Lease trucks are limited at 65... with dispatch to Canada a possibility, the ECM must be limited to no more than that. Company trucks are at 62. There's a minimum fuel economy requirement set at 7.25 mpg for company guys... really easy to meet with the new trucks.
As far as training is concerned, you'll have some time with a trainer for sure. Not sure how much that will be... you're going to have to talk to a recruiter for that.
