I was a project manager for large scale commercial construction. I got to the point where I hated going in to the office or even going on site to manage my crews. I remember clear as day sitting there on day and just thinking that’s it I’m done with this. I went to sage cdl school at lunch that same day to start the process, went back to the office walked into the CEO’s office and told him I’ll stay long enough to close out all jobs I have going right now then I’m out. Getting that cdl and going OTR was the best thing FOR ME I ever did because I absolutely am in love with the lifestyle of a OTR driver. There are of course still headaches to contend with, traffic is not one of them you just get used to it, but dispatchers and load planners that have no idea what they are doing is properly number one. For this reason I would recommend paying for school yourself so that you are not obligated to work for one of the mega carriers, I personally found that the office staff at large companies are just not as on top of things as smaller fleets. Trucks are better, faster and have more amenities like apu’s , fridges and power inverter. Plus you actually have a personal relationship with your dispatcher rather than just being a truck that’s on a screen. There is a HUGE cultural shock when you go into trucking but in a really really good way for me at least. The freedom and autonomy was incredibly refreshing. I was able to breath and take in life. I actually enjoy being on the road for a month at a time I like the home of a rig, I love being in a different city every night. Wednesday I’m in Kansas Friday I’m on Long Island. That rocks. You’ll either love it or find it’s not for you but what a little adventure you’ll have finding out, right? Do it man, call a school today, heck yeah. Make sure they have manual trucks though or you get a automatic only restriction on your license. Also last Tuesday they came out with a new reg involving training and testing. You should read about that on line before you put money down, also go to the fmcsa website to make sure the school you like is listed as being in compliance with the new guidelines. I wish you all the best and envy the adventure you are about to embark on, what a ride.
