I am actually considering Swift, however the recruiter says I will go to the TX Academy instead of the Phoenix one for the sole reason Chinatown mentioned, the CDL.

Yes, I have heard plenty of bad things about Swift, but there is two sides of a coin, as I have also heard plenty of good things too.

They also have a terminal here that is about 13 minutes drive from my house. I haven't always been a model citizen, and Swift has said they would hire me.

I'm trying to weigh the options now, and after the first of the year take the leap.

With my wife being active duty, I want to be able to stay out on the road as much as possible for the first year to stock pile a savings. She is guaranteed to be here at Bliss at least another year before having to go elsewhere or choose to get out. If I work hard this first year, and I am able to save enough, then her decision might be an easier one.

Thanks for the insight so far. I will keep everyone posted..

You may want to ask yourself, honestly, why you cannot stay at one place of employment.

I tell people one of the surest ways to be disappointed with trucking, is to have problems, then jump out on the road.

Your going to be gone for a good three weeks at a clip.

Good luck, I think some self examination is in order though, perhaps accepting responsibility for your own actions.

My "gasp" comment was me making fun of some of the anti Swift threads and comments . I can only go by what I see with my own eyes. Swift like any other job is what you put into it.

The main reason I haven't held a steady job was because until my wife joined the Army, I was the at home parent. She had a steady job, and I did design work from home mostly. I do web and graphic design. Thanks for assuming that clearly something is wrong with me though.

We are not having problems other than financial problems. We make it every month, but my job doesn't pay a whole lot. I'm fine with that since it is something I enjoy. I have worked there for over a year since coming to El Paso.

We want to get to a better spot financially and I am aware that being a truck driver can help achieve that. So I came here to get a little reassurance. I didn't come for a counseling session.

I will add that, one could argue me wanting to become more financially stable is in fact "taking responsibility for my actions" as you put it.

My home life, family life and self worth are just fine. I want to ensure that as a first year driver I can make money (more than the pittance I am making now) and be able to build a much nicer savings than we have now. I'm not sure where you are coming from telling me to reflect on myself after reading one internet post.

Self reflection is a daily thing everyone should do. Not just those who "have problems". Normal fully functioning people should take a few minutes nightly and do it.

Moose.. I caught the sarcasm for sure. I agree whole heartedly that any job is what you make of it. They are offering me a spot, and a chance to learn how to drive. I am jumping both feet in, and prepared to work hard. Thanks for the input for sure. Much Appreciated.

Eventually, you will leave trucking. Trucking isn't long-term for everyone.
If you use the money buy into debt, you'll struggle. If you use the money to save for the future, you'll have a way out when you tire.

Yea as of right now, we are only about 14k in debt.. Including the 9k for our car. I figure if the wife stays in the Army during the first year, that will easily be gone. Easily.

I want to give it at least a year and go from there.

Just curious on why you were considering the Army with those physical limitations? I just got my CDL a year ago and I'm 56. I'm in meh shape as well and I'm now loading and unloading my own truck as well as making deliveries, and some days it #### near kills me.
