i went the private school training route with a company called c1 in indianapolis. they offered guaranteed job with my choice of 3 diff companies (usa truck, roehl, or pam) upon successful completion of course. it cost 4 grand, all opf which they would finance if you couldnt pay up front. up front payment was 1/2 the cost..2 grand.. and no finance charges, so thats what i did. you also needed money for dinners. breakfast and lunch were part of the program. this seemed like a better way to go to me, because with company school you pretty much sign your life away until the school is paid off. this way, all 3 of the company choices offered tuition reimbursement (usa truck paid me 100 bucks a month) so after 20 months they had paid off the school...but i couldve left usa truck anytime i found greener pastures with no liability...they just wouldnt pay any more tuition reimbursement.

This is the route I am leaning towards. If all of my calculations are correct I can pay for my school and have enough left over to pay for any miscellaneous expenses that come with the school, and my time spent in orientation and out on the road with my trainer. I don't want to have to worry about money when I hit the road. I wan't to be able to concentrate on what I am doing and absorb as much information as I can. I might try and sit in on some of the company recruiting visits at one of my local schools to try and gather more info on my qualifications. I don't know if I could stomach a company holding training debt over my head...

All companies will want your last 10 years of work experience. Some are anal about gaps in employment and want to have notarized reasons and witness why you were unemployed. Also most know if you were a job hopper b4 you were a truck driver. They probably wont be willing to invest time and money to get you to their orientations, because this career if full of the things that you say were reasons you job hopped.

I would write down my last 10 year work history if I were you. Complete with phone numbers addresses and dates. Also reasons for leaving because that is what they will ask you on all applications as a driver, and if you can't fill out that 10 year work history to the best of your knowledge. Then I wouldn't waste my time spending money for a CDL and not have anyone hire me.

I would even send in pre application for those who offer company sponsored training to see if they would approve you with all those gaps and if they don't approve you then more then likely no one else will.

If they do approve you then even though you don't want to go through their school. You have a back up plan and a place to go when you do have your cdl if no one else is interested .

Yes you still owe if you get fired. Most have easy installment payment plans. Really no big deal especially if you can get a better job afterwards.

Check the WIA program; it pays for your CDL school, no charge to you. Google WIA. Usually apply for this throught the local dept. of labor or unemployment office. Other than WIA, try the community college.

I got my schooling funded by WIA. It's a ton of paperwork and red tape, but if you don't have the $$$ up front, it's well worth it. Theres 3 others in my class using the program as well.
