Am i wrong for not delivering?

So i get call from new broker asking if i'll take the 6k i say no I'm waiting for shipper to open as they have my signature. Shipper is not at all concerned say i should work it out with receiver. I call receiver and speak to logistics Coordinator who puts me on three way with new broker. I'm only half listening cause I'm upset that I'm going to end up with nothing or only $7k. I decide to take the $7k and tune into the conversation. I tell them that I'm waiting for shipper to call me back and get off the phone. I call shipper and they say they have nothing to do with the load. I call the logistics coordinator back and we agree on the $7000. I ask for Comcheck and he says he will call me back. He promises to pay but doesn't have cash and that they will pay. I tell him I'm on my way. I get to shipper and walk into warehouse and first person i meet turns out to be the owner of the company. He brings me into the office and takes me to talk with lady that will write the check or do wire transfer. They need my insurance and w9. He seems more concerened about getting me paid than getting the product. He offers me his car to go cash check at local bank. I back truck into the dock and take his car to wells fargo and fail at getting the check cashed. After sitting and talking with the Owner of the company and the Logistics coordinator they offer me the load on a monthly basis. Owner admits that he thought I may be involved with the bad guys. I tell him i thought it was the new broker but he says he knows him and i'm only one who benifits. I tell him that if i had delivered the load on saturday I would not have gotten paid and new broker would have kept the money. But at the same time If new broker didn't call me I would have delivered the load and been screwed.

Somewhere in there I also talk to the real company that the bad guys were posing as and they tell me that they have been dealing with this for about a month now. They have talked with the FBI and local authorities. I'm the first one to get paid as all others delivered the load and waited 30days to ask about payment. I forward info that i have to them and they will send it to authorities.

I took the $7000 and learned to look more into who I'm doing business with. I'll also be more careful about last minute loads with rates that are too good to be true even though I have been lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time and get $4 or more per mile.

Sounds like you may have found a great deal in a #### show. Hope that is the case and it works out on a regular for you.

So... none of this helps other people unless you tell us who the bad guys are.

Also, this was a great opportunity to get some direct freight. Hope you took advantage of it!

Everybody wants to be a owner operator.
It'll take a month to make up for this.
Your at the bottom of this food chain.
The broker and shipper are telling you
To take it or leave it.
To hell with what some rate con says.

If you need the money, take the 7 grand and
Write it off as a lesson learned.
Option B, with a reefer load ain't worth the trouble.

The true broker and the second broker that alerted me to the potential fraud are both innocent until proven guilty. The potentially bad company in all of this is Mason Trucking I don't have their MC or I'd post it. I've read for countless hours on this site and attribute my success to that fact. I just wanted to share a learning experience. I thought I was careful and may have gotten too lax in checking brokers credit. Brokers that send pdf file packet and call from number not ond fmcsa or dat and need truck to move asap and can't do fuel advance is now major red flag.

I didn't cash the check, but not because I didn't try. The owner letting me use his car to go try and cash the check convinced me its good. No Citi Bank Branch in too many locations so I'm going to open chase or BofA account.

Open an account with a credit union in the co-op network and you have 30k free ATMs nationwide and no check cashing fees. Mine credits my account when they get the check or it goes in an affiliated ATM.
