so my boss constantly has me training and NO ADDITIONAL compensation. the situation is frustrating. i have trained something like 6 drivers, most of it is training involving the milk sampling, seals on the trailer, verifying wash tickets, ensuring the milk is proper temperature, and properly filling out a milk ticket. i guess i have a flawless record that not many drivers have, NO REJECTIONS. the trailer doesnt move if the wash ticket is out of date, the trailer is always sealed and it matches the milk ticket, and its never over temperature. at least two of the drivers i trained have since quit with another likely to quit before winter.

my boss has a serious driver retention problem and apparently he has selected me to train replacements. the main issue i believe is the detention pay which is terrible. its a measly $10 per hour after 2 hours of sitting. for example if you run a route (i wont mention the route) that pays $160 it takes roughly 7-8 hours to load, if you take the said load to the plant to deliver and it takes an additional 8 hour of sitting time (the plants can indeed be that bad) you get another $60. you end up getting $220 divided by 15 hours its less then $15 per hour for the day. the minimum wage here in ny is $10.40 per hour so the pay for guys that deliver to the plant on a daily basis is not very good.

on occasion he also has hired inexperienced drivers and expected me to teach them how to drive. i have 1-1/2 years in the seat and i drive around 100 miles per day. i feel confident in my ability to safely operate my rig but i refused to teach the inexperienced driver how to drive. im not getting any additional pay for this and i didnt feel comfortable doing it.i felt like i would have been like the blind leading the blind. a couple of the other drivers gave him minimal driving practice and he was on his own. he promptly tore up a set of tandems and ripped the cover off a manhole. he pulled out of the receiving bay without first checking to make sure his equipment was secure and ready to move out.

im getting discouraged constantly being told to train when i feel that im getting used. how would you guys approach this situation?

i know how my boss is i would be happy with an additional $15 or $20 per day. frankly i would be happy with anything to acknowledge that i am training someone and getting some additional pay. getting NOTHING for it, is kind of unacceptable for me. it might come down to me refusing to train for nothing additional, if there is no benefit to me, WHY DO IT?

he is using me, im not stupid.

If your prepared to leave give the boss an ultimatum, you've been more than generous with your time training others.
Everywhere I've worked offers some type of premium for the extra time/work required to train.

After I had found another job, I would tell you current boss you feel you ought to be paid for training new drivers. If he says no, move to the next company. If you feel your current job is good enough, even if you don't like the extra duty of training, just suck it up. Only you can decide if it's worth the hassle. If they pay/work are OK with you, don't listen to people saying they wouldn't do it.

unfortunately that is the way he operates, you have to threaten him to get any fair treatment. he would rather take the next guy with a screwed up license or criminal record that is nearly unemployable elsewhere. it's sad because i enjoy my route and the job itself is not bad, but the boss is in a word...... cheapskate. i would rather stay here for a while but the question is HOW much does one put up with?

unfortunately all i guess i could do is finish up with the current guy and refuse to train without additional funds. it serves me no benefit.

the situation with the current guy is kind of a bad joke. the guy came to my boss..... he lost his CDL on the basis of not getting his med card renewed. company that does the risk assessment told my boss, no CDL..... DO NOT HIRE. well he hires him off the table anyways. the guy failed his first roadtest upon not doing a proper pretrip. boss refuses to give this guy a cent, not one penny until he passes a road test. the guy is sitting in the passenger seat of my truck without any form of pay. his next roadtest this coming friday. IF he passes AND gets his CDL back he already told me he plans on quitting. my boss is wasting my time and im starting to get pissed off. it will be 3 weeks with him riding around with me without pay, before he hopefully roadtests and gets a paycheck. the guy cannot legally drive with a load, and he is NOT insured by our insurance (he is NOT an employee) yet my boss wants me to allow him to get some time in the seat.

im shaking my head at all of this. i dont feel like i should allow him to drive knowing he is not covered by the insurance. what happens if there is an accident? why has my boss put me in this situation. i let him drive twice, but now that i realize he is not on the insurance, NO WAY.

he is doing nothing more then wasting my time by creating an immediate flight risk. annoyed.

he has a permit, but that IS NOT a CDL. legally he can drive NOT under a load and a licensed driver must be in the truck. this has gone too far i think. if my boss wants him to drive, he can take him out. otherwise im washing my hands of it.

We always have our best drivers do any training required.
With that thought in mind, you must be the best driver your boss has.
    That is truly frightening.
