Ok Im looking to get a new 2m/440 antenna for my truck,a T600. I plan to install it on the rear of my cab on the headache rack. Ive looked at several but since Im new Id thought Id see what some of the rest of you are running. I currently have an older Icom that is just 2m but plan to upgrade to a newer radio that I can hit 440 with also. So lets hear it guys, what is your suggestions? Oh and Id like to stay under a $100 and less than $75 would be great! Feel free to give advice on what radio you're using also. Not a rich man here mind you.

I run a Tram 1180 on my S-10 on the roof. It costed me $20 new at a Ham fest and it does ok. It's a dual bander, 38" tall and has a 3 db gain on 2 M and a 5.5 db gain on 70 CM.

Larsen makes a 270 that is a little bit more robust than my antenna as it doesn't have the plastic loading coil. It's also a little more expensive...around $70 I think. IIRC it has like a .5 more gain on 70 CM but 2 M is the same as my 1180.

Also Dan are you located in Windsor MO?

Cool. Well Dan you may know we have a ham club up there in Warrensburg and you probably already know about the great repeater set up we have in Warrensburg. There's also a club/repeater in Sedalia and I believe even a 2 M repeater in Windsor that just came back on the air. Either antenna I mentioned you can pick up from Associate Radio there in KC. Either antenna will get you into any of the repeaters I mentioned.

Also i forgot to mention the Comet SSB-5 is a good dual bander, a buddy of mine runs it on his truck.

How high is the spot where you are going to mount the antenna? I run a MFJ super gainer 7/8 wave, basically a copy of Diamond and some others. The only drawback is that it is around 62 1/2 inches tall, so mounting can be a challenge to stay under 13' 6". But it works great. Mine is on a mirror arm, but I had to disable the foldover, it didn't like the winds in Wyoming.
