The buggies in our area ride as far onto the shoulder as they can. Even so, I don't pass unless the on-coming lane is clear. Like Sequoia, I don't want to spook the horse.
I'm not paid by the mile, so getting stuck behind one is kind of a reminder that slowing down in life isn't necessarily a bad thing. It gives me a chance to enjoy the countryside. But I can see where it would drive you folks bananas.

Regardless of whether the folks in the wagons are right or wrong.....regardless of whether they may be idiots or not.....regardless of whether they should be on highways or not...THEY WERE and their were breathing human beings in that buggy!!! An endogenous and inherent respect for life tells me when driving to avoid hitting humans when ever possible!!! Regardless of whether they are "right or wrong." I am assuming the driver was intoxicated in some way....either by substances or extreme fatigue....because if he was not....then the alternative is just too unpalatable.
I was in a situation in my truck with a co-driver a while back. To keep it short....I had to make a panic stop to avoid creaming a woman in a 4 wheeler. My co-driver piped up.."It woulda bin her fault if she got killed."
Perhaps so once in the courts.....BUT I DON'T WANT DEAD HUMANS ON THE HIGHWAY THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! I HAPPEN TO BE KINDA FOND OF OUR SPECIES!!! EVEN THE IDIOTS!!
A bit of a rant, but I think you know how I feel......Tazz, Trilleth, AFSTruckerswife and 11 others Thank this. -
Doesn't matter to me whether it is an Amishman in a buggy, a Yuppie on a bicycle or jogging, or a derelict stumbling along the side of the road, I slow down and yield to them, and only attempt to pass when I am darn sure it is safe, and give them as wide a space as is possible. Anything less and you are not doing the trucking community any PR favors!
AFSTruckerswife, otherhalftw, Travelinman and 3 others Thank this. -
How you're paid is not an issue, or at least it shouldn't be. The only drivers it's an issue for are those who can't bear the thought of stopping for anything such as showering, slow traffic, or anything else. -
To say the Amish think they own the road reflects quite the opposite. They have as much right to be there as anyone else. Very sad in deed. I grew up around Amish in Lancaster county, PA. I like and respect their culture. Them horse can even read stop signs, lol. Actually they run the same routes all the time, they know all the moves. Kind of like cruise control.
That driver can kiss his career goodbye.Elvenhome21 and AFSTruckerswife Thank this. -
well, here's a better one. How the HELL do you climb in and operate a commercial vehicle under the influence of anything? There is a rash of this bull crap happening lately.48Packard Thanks this. -
Do the Amish pay taxes? Ive always wondered about that when Im driving thru an Amish area and the shoulder of the road is paved really wide to accomodate their buggies. You would think if they didnt pay taxes we wouldnt build the #### roads for them
I_HATE_MINIVANS Thanks this. -
Under the influence !!!!!
If this is the case,
this incident should have never happened.......... -

Do they pay a fuel tax that helps pays for the roads which they travel? NO!
Do they have lights or even a slow moving vehicle sign most of the time? NO!
Do they have any form of schooling about the rules of the road? NO!
Do they follow the rules of the road? NO!
Do most of the amish around here pay any form of tax? NO! Amazing what you can get away with when you do not have a SS#.
It's complete BS that they think the laws do not apply to them because of there "religion". I run milk truck on some very twisty back roads around here. A few years ago my friend came around a corner in his milk truck and an oncomig amish horse spooked and crossed the centerline. He was forced into the ditch and nearly tipped the truck over. How is that safe? The amish around here have zero respect for anyone else on the road so I am very jaded. I can't stand them. Thank god they passed a law in WI a few years ago requiring cattle registation. That drove some of them away.Last edited: Jul 9, 2011
