Break? Nope. Not yet. I've found some sloppy ones though.
-
I never had one break either however I did lose 2 drive shafts at once. I had the pinion bearing in the back Pumpkin drop into the rear end gear at speed. It jammed up the works and threw the Ring gear through the housing busted 4 axle shafts the thru shaft plus the front rear end and power divider and when the pinion shaft snapped off out of the housing finally it took out the drive line all the way to the Carrier bearing. Boss was NOT happy with the foreman that week. Why I had been screaming about the rebuilt for weeks saying there was something wrong and the #### foreman was like DUMB DRIVER knows Nothing.

What is missing from this article? Oh, that's right, a reason for the problem to occur, was it a electronic gremlin? Was a connection loose? All you who say "this wouldn't happen with a manual", what happens if your ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED ENGINE decides to die? You'll still loose air, you'll still loose steering, you'll still loose engine brakes, oh, and unless you have magical properties, you STILL WON"T BE ABLE TO DOWNSHIFT.

Show me a truck that has the AMT behind a mechanical engine. Not sure if I should shake my head or laugh.

Actually, if your engine dies (doesn't matter if it is electronic or mechanical), as long as the driver doesn't take it out of gear, the engine will keep spinning (powered by the drive line) and since the air compressor runs off the engine, it will continue pumping air into the tanks same as it would if the engine were still running under its own power. If you for some reason shift it into neutral, then and only then would the engine come to a stop. With an automatic, if IT decides to take itself out of gear, you're F'd whether you wanted to be or not. As a driver, I prefer to have absolute control over things like that. Sure, you've got "manual mode"...but that computer can still override your best efforts at the worst possible moments...which is just unacceptable.EZ Money, tucker, Bad Monkey and 1 other person Thank this.

Somebody above said shifting gives you something to do and he is right. Keeps you more alert in my opinion. My current job I would die or lose my license with an automatic haha
rank Thanks this. -
But driver you need an auto so you can be safe and concentrate on your surroundings haha. Next they'll be giving out tickets for distracted driving to anyone that can shift a truckbobbyhill Thanks this.
-
Haha I guess that's how you know you can't really drive when shifting takes away from your concentration. I really want to know though where some people are driving to need so much concentration a war zone maybe?
