I know I almost bought a truck from Schneider when I worked there. It is not really a lease like most of these companies are. Payment amount and length are determined by how much the truck is. You can't start out with a new truck, you have to buy used, but they have lots of different options.
The best part about their "lease" is you can quit the company and take your truck with you. The payments go up slightly, but try and do that with other companies.
For the record, I don't work for Schneider anymore and I didn't buy a truck from them. The dedicated account the miles nose-dived right before I went to get the truck and I backed out. This was a few years ago. Thinking about buying a truck right now though. Looking for finance companies and stuff. Found a nice truck I'd like to buy thats been well taken care of, but it's a 96. Who knows if I'll be able to find financing or a company to lease to. -
I am thinking of buying my own truck and trying research all the different options. This thread was helpful but I may have missed something because I don't have time to read through all the bickering. I say, I don't care who posts the info, KH could not be any worse than recruiters and salesmen. I would like to see KH continue posting with info, and other driver's posting with their first hand experience.
There, that's the beginning, and the end, of my bickeringbig wheels and The Challenger Thank this. -
Jake,
Schneider is hiring for their choice program but it is limited to three or four states mostly Ohio, Indiana, Illinois parts of Missouri and some other state. pullingtrucker is leased on to them and is the guy I would talk to. Now for leasing their trucks is something I would to hear from someone who has done their lease that has numbers. I am also curious as to why their trucks are priced high.
I still JCT has one of the best l/p's out there. They let you run for three-four weeks before deducting payments. Rather than the $200 in fuel it used to be, you get one free full up. Better than most companies. Their start dates are filled till January according to the JCT thread here.
Stevens offers a 60 day trial lease. I would like to hear about that.
KHdavid07003 and RockyWI Thank this. -
I don't think JCT would hire me up here in Oregon. I like their trucks though. I am going to try to stay away from the lease / purchase thing. I am considering it though. GTI has a no down payment / no balloon payment program. I am also going to look into Christienson Trucking. They have a no down payment lease/ purchase plan, and they are an all O/O company.
So far I think I might lease on with Hendrickson Trucking when I find a truck. They are a western regional company and they tell me I should be able to get home pretty easily. Plus they pay .95/mi + fuel scg. Another good thing is they only require truck to be '95 or newer. So I am looking at older trucks with unusually low miles or rebuilds. Have found some interesting trucks for 20k or less.
I am also looking into the idea of renting a truck to get started. Ryder's website says $400/wk + .07/mi. That sounds like a great idea considering I wouldn't have to worry about repairs and maintenence and I could save up money and business credit to buy a truck I really want. It seems to good to be true so I'm sure I'll find a problem with this idea once I look into it further. Will any companies hire an O/0 with a rented truck? -
I think you would be better off getting a good used truck for $400.00 a week. If the maintenance is free for the truck then it would be worth it. Is that new or used?
KH -
I am pretty sure it would be used. But I think if you rent a truck week to week from Ryder you don't have to worry about the cost of maintenance or repairs. (beyond the .07/mi)
I would hate to buy a used truck and be stuck paying for a broken down truck. At least not until I have more $ in the bank. I need to get something going in order to save money.
I have a decent job with a big company with a pretty small transportation operation. (30 or so drivers in the Northwest region) Problem is, I just recently transferred up here and now I'm on the bottom of the line as far as having something to do. One half day trip last week so I have had a lot of time to look into becoming an O/O. I have no intention of finding another company driver job. The one I have is about as good as it gets, for the guys above me who have work to do. Several have been there 20+ years. Anyway, my goal would be to own several trucks by the time I am old enough to retire.Last edited: Sep 27, 2009

Ok i will throw my two cents in here. K/H keep up the good work. It's nice to see the new generation with an interest in something other than video games. As far as L/P's go i have had a few small shots in them about ten years ago. They are there for the company to make money and keep their trucks going. That being said if your a young kid full of energy and time it may just be the way to go.
Sure you will most likely make very little money, but what it will do is get you seat time and a chance to see what owning your own buisness is like. Best of all you will get your own pad and a chance to see the great USA. Where else can you get seat time, a place to sleep, and freedom which is what every young gun wants. Best of all you get paid for it.
Ok that was my confidence builder and now i will bring you down a bit. You must work hard and take whatever comes your way. You must watch every penny you spend and keep your truckstop time to a minimum. You must keep your eyes open and be very cautios while driving.
There is no doubt that many fail with a L/P when leasing from the same company you work for. In this economy you take what you can get and work your butt off to stay above water. It is what it is. Not pretty but for some it is the only option to become a truck driver.
The best advice i can offer is to suck it up for a year or two and work as hard and as long as you can. Hopefully by then this economy will rebound and things will get better.
Good Luck all!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
I found out today that I am approved with Schneider Finance for just about any truck I want with 0 down. I think I could even get a brand new one but I don't plan on it. It is true that you can work for any company. But after you start with a company you have to stay with that company or pay a deposit. The amount depends on the truck. The one I am looking at would be 2400 deposit to change jobs. The lease seems pretty good. It comes with a warranty and the payments are 2k per month for 2 years with 6k due at the end. The truck is 2006 Frt. Century with a little over 610k. It comes with an APU. But there a lot of other trucks I can consider.
I would love to hear from someone who has bought a truck through Schneider before and / or worked for them as an O/O. I am looking into working for them in their western regional dry van division.
I am also looking into leasing with Hendrickson Trucking, May Trucking, and Market Transport. Anybody in here every pulled for any of them?
