    Aeroméxico Flight 498
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeroméxico_Flight_498

Language had absolutely NOTHING to do with this crash. And all airline pilots and civil pilots all over the WORLD must be able to communicate in English, as it's the language of civil aviation. So an AeroMexico 737 flying in Chinese airspace would communicate with the ATC in English, for example.

I'll give you that.....How about enforcing that rule-"English communication" on the NAFTA trucks?

Since we're getting back to the OT.....

    NAFTA trucks.....
It is not a question of if, but when.......

We have a government that is more concerned for the right of a third world country to send its people here to compete unfairly with its own citizens; placing those same citizens at risk from unsafe trucks and drivers who are not required to meet the stringent regs of the US enforcement in their own country.....
I would suspect that before the next round of tariffs enforced on the US by Mexico begin....Obama will cave...and the gates...let alone the border fences, will come down.....

America has been steam-rolled and our kowtowing politicians are to blame....

No BS there. It was proven and continues to be proven. And do you really think the Mexican trucks in the program are not still operating in this country. They certainly are

They do enforce the English rule for the Mexican drivers, although some are so anal as to expect a Mexican to speak English with an Oxford accent in order to be "proficient" in English.

What makes you think they don't speak English? Because you hear them speaking amongst themselves in their native language? Or speaking Spanish on the CB? I imagine if they wanted to include you in their conversation, they would speak in English.

Or perhaps you're one of those that gets on the CB and ridicules them accents or pronunciations as many do in the Laredo area.

It might interest you to know that English is a required course in all Mexican schools, not an elective, and in Tamaulipas state, across the border from Texas, it's the law!

Then why are the various DOT's beginning either require officers become bilingual or, they are pushing to hire bilingual officers?
You make it sound like the average Mexican driver has a college level education....
    Come on...let's get real....

What country has a higher illiteracy rate?
What country has a lower GDP?
What country pushes it citizens to break another country's sovereignty and immigration laws?

It is not the US my friend...
How many Americans are jumping the fence and heading south to do the jobs "Mexicans won't do"?

    Come on....let's get real....
    Mexico needs NAFTA...not the US....
NAFTA mainly benefits Mexico...not the the citizens of the US....

How many Mexicans lost their jobs due to NAFTA compared to the amount of US jobs lost to Mexico?

It doesn't hurt anyone to be bilingual. Broaden your horizens etc.

They don't have college level educations, simply high school and many have tech school which in Mexico is an alternative to high school level.

    1. What does literacy rate have to do with the issue? I know many American truckers who are book stupid and truck smart.

    2. GDP? Nothing to do with the issue of Mexican trucks

    3. Mexico does not "push" it's citizens to come to the US, but like the US does not restrict it's citizens from traveling to most countries, Mexico doesn't restrict it's people. To think otherwise is to subscribe to all the nativist BS that is pushing the immigration debate, which also has nothing to do with the issue here.

    4. More than 500,000 Americans live south of the border, as do I, and more than 5000 make their homes across the border in the border cities like Reynosa, Nuevo Laredo and Cd Juarez.

Nafta beens successful for 16 years if you look at the data, and not listen to the protectionists who will say or do anything to push their agenda. Perhaps you should read this article titled We Must Repeal NAFTA and see if it'll open you eyes to the truth.

Many of our factories that left the rust belt relocated to the southern United States, where taxes are lower, they have right to work laws, the climate is business friendly and they don't have the unions screwing with them.

How many jobs did Mexico lose? Where do you think the illegal come from? Southern Mexico. Many are farmers who couldn't compete with our subsidized corn and other grains that they once grew.

I think we've had this conversation before and it didn't penetrate you thick skull then, and I imagine I am wasting my time now.

Agreed....but Mexico is not at all like the US...Here it's "Press 2 for English".....I doubt that Mexico is that accommodating...When I visited Mexico...I had to speak Spanish....

How many years of education are required in Mexico?
Let's compare what is required to earn a high school diploma in the US v. Mexico....

My kid's high school They are required to have reading and writing at the 10th grade level...

    You must pass algebra II...

You must have had at least 2 years of a foreign language...

You must demonstrate the ability to use a computer and its various applications effectively...

That is to graduate from high school....

Logbooks, fuel and mileage records....The ability to communicate with shippers, receivers, DOT...Spanish and broken English might get them by in liberal California...but not in South Dakota, Montana, or Wyoming for example....

But it does have everything to do with what a Mexican carrier will run v. an American carrier....Poor people will work for nothing....

    Oh please....http://www.eagleforum.org/topics/amnesty/Mexican-Guidebook.pdf

Denial is not a river in Egypt.....

And at any given moment...you can lose your homes....unless the laws have been recently changed...A non-citizen cannot own property but can lease....We have two friends who "have" beach property in Ensenada...they have 99 year leases....That can be revoked at anytime...

    And Mexico doesn't subsidize????

Uh...back in '08 when diesel was $5+ a gallon...Mexican carriers were paying $2/g.... Allowing them to "Bottom-feed" the rates. I saw it take place with the dump biz....Yes that's right...Mexican dump truck O/O's are running here in the US...That's partly why the Ten-wheeler rates went from an average of $80/h to $45/h overnight.... If you only pay $2/g for fuel...you sure as hell can underbid the competition who still has to pay $5/g

Your prerogative...I think your an expatriate who hates America.....

And again....There is nothing we can do to stop the Mexican trucks from rolling in....Our politicians sold out to the drug cartels long ago...But the NAFTA truckers should expect a good deal of resistance from carriers who have obey regs that as we all know...Mexican carriers ignore....

How many Mexican trucks are equipped with DPF's...What about SCR's?????

I bet our liberal kowtowing government still allow them to roll....

The port deadline was Jan 1, '10.....Because the few Mexican trucks that are port concessionaires couldn't meet the Jan deadline...They were extended to April...

I didn't receive such courtesy....I had to go out and purchase a new rig to be CARB compliant...

Again...where is the fairness in this?

Again...NAFTA rigs have their own set of rules...which are they get to run whatever and however they choose...

Bogey, freightmaster and Texas-Nana Thank this.

    1. So what! Just press 1! It only takes a nanosecond!

    2. Years of education in Mexico? Basic 14 years. 2 years Kinder 6 years Primero, 3 years Secundaria, 3 years Preparatory (Kindergarten, Primary, Secundary, and High School)

Reading Writing, Spanish, Phys Ed, English (from 6th grade on) Mathematics, (Algebra, Calculus, grade specific) I don't have one with me, but when I'm home, I'll look at my kids report cards and give you the full curriculum. And yes, they have computer labs.

Bilingual log books are available. Shipping documents are the same in English or Spanish (sign on this line and date it) Numbers and the alphabet is the same, with a couple of additions to the alphabet which is of no significance to us.

It's been proven ( NATSO TRUCKERS NEWS AUG 2009) that Mexican rates are in the neighborhood of $2.00 a mile. They've stated they won't pull our cheap freight. They pull theirs up here and go back with freight under contract to their customers at their rates.

Fuel was only $5.00 a gallon for a brief time. Now, with Mexico's 20% subsidy a thing of the past, it is cheaper for them to fuel here than in their country.

You can own property, 100 klicks inland from the coast or 65 klicks from the border.

I'm aware of the Americans that got scammed in Ensenada several years ago. They should have investigated further. Or do as I do. My home is owned by my wife so it's a no brainer. And it passes to the children etc. There are ways around everything when you care to try, concerning property ownership.

Nop. Not an ex pat that hates America. I thank America every week as I transfer my US earnings into my BANAMEX account. I do hate what this country has come to. The nativist and right wing whackos blaming all their problems on the Mexicans and Mexico. The trite crap about "taking our country back" from the tea baggers. Hell, this country has survived for over 200 years. It ain't going nowhere.

And I hate it when I see children killing children in schools. Professors murdering their peers, Minutemen murdering innocent 9 year old children to fund their vigilante purposes, and BP agents being acquitted for cold blooded murder, and being made heroes in the process.

And the atmosphere of hate and intolerance that leads to white punks in Shenandoah Pa. being allowed to murder an undocumented migrant in front of his American wife and baby, the Police helping the killers cover the crime, and then, receiving a sentence of only 6 months for "simple assault"? You think that's right?

Mexico has it's own share of problems, but nothing like the deterioration of societal values such as has happened in the US and it sure as hell ain't the fault of the Mexicans!

WELL, according to this site >>> http://www.mexicomike.com/database/runner/public/mx_fuel_prices_list.php <<< it would be hard to show that buying Diesel fuel in Texas, NM, or AZ would be cheaper than in the interior of Mexico. Another site explains that a 250 gallon fillup in a commercial truck would save $750 over buying fuel in the U.S.A. it is here >>> http://www.bajainsider.com/driving-baja/gaspricesmexico.htm <<< how far off are these sites, according to your "real world sitings" and don't throw in your barely across the border stops. We all know you can get fuel 50 miles south and drive 400 miles north of the border and back and U.S.truckers can't compete with $2.39/gallon fuel. With a 200 gallon purchase you save $100. Maybe not Huge savings, but with gringo's able to work for $75/day, we can't pay our $800+/mo rent. And $800 don't get much of an apt. Spend $800/mo. in Mex. and I'll bet you get a mansion for 4 families, huh?
