NAFTA is here to stay.
The global economy is here to stay (and always has been, folks).
The US is falling behind the rest of the world everyday.
We spend 25% of our GDP on the military, but there's so many hoops to jump through to go to college it isn't even funny.
Most countries are turning out young people that are fluent in 2 languages minimum and often 3. The US has, what 3 years of foreign language during HS? What a JOKE!
Instead of allowing more skilled and educated immigrants into the US we are lowering the number of H-2B visas for skilled workers such as scientists, computer programmers and analysts, and other highly skilled workers that we need to stay competitive in the world marketplace.
And I'm all for letting in unskilled migrants and laborers as "guest" workers on temp visas. And we need to fix our broken joke of an immigration system, people wouldn't cross the border.
And for those of you that "think" migrants are taking YOUR jobs, are you working in agriculture, picking crops in 115 degree heat and working for a piece rate? No, I didn't think so. Why do you think US agricultural products are so cheap? MIGRANT LABOR!!!
Funny how truckers want to defend their jobs now... Didn't hear any truckers caring about US job losses before...MexicoTrucker Thanks this. -
What's the average level of education of a trucker in the US? Not very high.
That America even has an illiteracy rate is a crime. In the world's richest country people graduate HS and can't even read or write at a 9th grade level.
And many Mexicans have lost their jobs due to NAFTA. Mainly in agriculture, and since those are the folks with the least education and opportunites, they are the ones most likely to cross the northern border in search of opportunities.
And actually, there are many people migrating to Mexico for work and business opportunities. For example Mexico has many of the same issues on it's southern border with Guatemala. And many people have immigrated into Mexico including Latin Americans, Chinese, Koreans, Africans and yes, Americans, Canadians and Europeans as well.
Former Mexican president Vicente Fox's grandfather was Joseph Fox, an American from Ohio that immigrated to Mexico in 1890 and never learned to speak Spanish. He even continued to fly an American flag on US holidays and married with a Mexican woman. And his grandson became the president of Mexico...
Immigration is a global thing and not limited to people moving to or wanting to enter the US.Last edited: Mar 2, 2010

Thanks, Mexico Trucker, for an excellent post.
But I would like to point out that Mexico does in fact lag behind the US in education. The actual level that is mandatory in Mexico is to the US 9th grade, which is the end of secundaria or Jr. High School.
Entrance to Mexican public high schools is highly competitive and many students don't pass the entrance exams.
But most Mexicans try to send their kids to private schools, many of which are of doubtful quality.
And despite the news on the US networks (Always depend on Fox for all your unbiased and balanced news, HAHAHA!) Mexico's crime rate has actually fallen in the past 10 years.
The drug war is the result of US demand for drugs. Simple fact. If Americans weren't addicted to so many drugs folks wouldn't be shipping them in. Simple solution: LEGALIZE! And then we all win, fewer deaths, huge increase of tax revenues and fewer folks in jail and prison.
Actual violent crime is lower than in the US. Mexicans still have many traditional familiy values that the US has lost.
Funny how the hate filled bigots in the US call every American that lives overseas an anti-American... Funny! So I guess all the folks that move to the US hate their homelands as well. What a childish way to think!
And I also feel good when I change American dollars into Mexican pesos and think about how much better I live SOUTH of the border...!MexicoTrucker Thanks this. -
I live in a "mixed" area....
Many of the Hispanic kids think that getting a "white" education is "Stupid"....Particularly from having to listen to white or black teachers...
These kids also consider themselves "Mexican"....even though many are third and fourth generation...
It cuts both ways Prof....
But for Mexican Trucker to make statements to the fact that Mexico's people and educational system are far superior to the US's is a blatant fallacy...
Our test scores in California are low...and guess what...It's because of the kids who don't want to be taught American history because it's "racist"...it's those same kids who have called themselves "Mexican"....and yet cannot even merit a "C" in Spanish...freightmaster and Big Duker Thank this. -
I agree with a lot of what you wrote above. 2nd, 3rd and even 4th generation Hispanics identify as Mexican, but not American. Many of them can speak neither good English nor good Spanish.
The drop-out rates of Hispanics is skyhigh in the US and many of those drop-outs turn to gangs and dealing drugs. Yep.
And Mexico beats the US hands-down in one area: If you want to do anything in Mexico, you better speak Spanish or bring somebody along who does.
No official forms in English anywhere in Mexico. And Mexicans expect immigrants to Mexico to speak Spanish. No free Spanish as a foreign langauge classes and no bilingual education like in California. Unless you pay for a decent private school. -
My niece is 3rd generation....The kids in her school...that is the Hispanic kids hate her because she acts "white"...
She speaks Castilian Spanish and is on the high school surf team....She calls herself "American".... -
Which means she can't really communicate with the TexMex crowd!
I doubt legalizing drugs here is an answer for anything except number of people in jail...but don't forget that drug use will massively increase; we'll have taught another generation that drugs are okay (like we're doing with gays now) and the jails will still be full of the result of aggressive drug use. -
There has been no concrete evidence that suggests that legalizing drugs "drastically" increases the rate of use in any country. Amsterdam legalized maryuana and there has been no increase in its use.
At the same time, edumacation of its detriment to society and health risks actually sent the right message to their children and their kids Choose not to "use". Likewise, if it was taxed and a portion of the proceeds were used for edumacation drug use would actually decrease. Please don't confuse my opinion with wishing they would legalize meth or crack. Meth destroys people's brain and every function in their body. But again legalizing and taxing weed could pay for needed programs that could help people on harder drugs get the treatment needed.
-
I doubt the validity of the last statement, since you can't compare the massive amounts of tobacco to what you need growing pot. The price of cigarettes has gone up so much though, I won't be surprised to see tobacco in backyards.
Pot is basically a weed; it is easy to grow.
You do have a point in the education factor, but places like Amsterdam from what I've heard have literally gone to hell morally as well.
Not that our cities are the Garden of Eden either.
