LOL!!! I originally worked as a line substance abuse counselor and later was promoted from supervisor to clinical program director at a methadone clinic. In short, the burnout rate among counselors is frightening high. Being in recovery myself (24 years a day at time) there is noting written that would exempt me from going from clinician to patient and decided to walk away before my own sobriety is jeopardized.

I have witnessed signs of abuse in the pain clinic over the years. IF you spend any time in a waiting room large enough there is always one or two who either have had too much or otherwise impacted. My favorite indications are the stumbles on rubber legs with feet of cement.

If as a untrained patient in those days can see that, I can only imagine what YOU or doctors have seen among those who have lost a battle with medicine or illegal drugs. I hate to say it but it's truly destructive to many. Hollowed out Baltimore in a hurry since the 80's Even today I would carry a case of small water in bottles so that if I come across one in the street when visiting family I would give him that bottle and make him or her drink it even though they are so deep in withdrawal that they cannot function well. Someone comes along sooner or later to inject the jugular vein in the neck with a good stiff hit. Gets them moving towards the crowley center. (Trauma)

Those days are over living here in the south. In some ways it's really a ... form of pestilence sweeping those caught up in it. Meth would be the biggie. I don't know of any medicine able to get them off Meth whatever that is. Trade one evil for another.

Yep, I worked as a substance abuse counselor back in the 90's mostly in adolescent residential facilities but I worked a short stint in the prison system in Arizona as well. Like you said the burn out rate and turnover in social services generally is astronomical.

I eventually left after about five years and went into IT support work in '99 during the whole Y2K conversion. Now after 20 years in IT and three layoffs due to off-shoring I'm looking forward to being a trucker!

    Not usually.

I was asked to submit a resume last week for a job driving a race car hauler.
That's the first time in just under 26 years of long haul that's happened.

And what's your status? Working yet? I may be uncertain about some things but the one thing of which I'm sure about is: there is no amount of salary that would entice me to sint in a room with an individual who A) Doesn't want to talk to me. B) 90% of what comnes out of his mouth is lie & C) Will not follow any recommendations given to him. I'm sure you could relate. Remember counseling someone in prison and being told, "my use is not that bad"? those were the days....
