Thanks for the advice. I really do see myself as being in this field for the long haul. No pun intended. Lol. After speaking with several people already in the field they said that with me only being 26 y/o...well 27 come Monday- I have a lot of potential to be with a company for 20 to 30+ years and that is something that companies look for as long as I dont have any issues. Ie: Tickets, accidents etc. I do have one question though- I hear that a common issue drivers have s that their loads are over when they go to a scale. Now the question is would that fall on the driver as being at fault and does the company consider that a screw up on the driver's end for not verifying the load or the shipper for not having things on their end situated? Just a random thought. Thanks again.

If in doubt weigh it at a public scale, or truck stop scale BEFORE YOU CROSS A STATE SCALE!!! Even if you have to go the opposite direction to get to a CERTIFIED SCALE... AND ALWAYS GET A SCALE TICKET!!!!
-
So in that situation what would you do? Go back to the company that loaded you and have them fix it?
White.Knight Thanks this. -
First see if you can get an older Driver to look at your Scale Ticket and maybe help you get it legal, he will know how to adjust your axles if possible. If you can't... Then call Dispatch and let them know that the load is not legal as loaded and what do they suggest. If they tell you to try and run it... YOU SAY NO!!!... If they insist you run. Secure the truck in a safe place (Truckstop, Rest Area...ect) and call your Safety Manager or the Boss, they will want to talk to you. BUT WHATEVER YOU DO DO NOT DRIVE THAT TRUCK UNTIL A PLAN TO DEAL WITH IT IS MADE!!!... 90% of the time your Dispatcher will call the Shipper and they will have you go back and they will fix it. NEVER LET ANYONE TALK YOU INTO RUNNING AN ILLEGAL LOAD!!!! OR AN UNPLACARDED HAZ-MAT LOAD....NEVER!!!! You could be fined BIG TIME, kill yourself or worse KILL SOMEONE ELSE!!! I always would think of how it would be, if I had maybe killed an entire family, just because I was too lazy or money hungry to run it LEGALLY!!! That is how you run for OVER 35 years and 3 1/2 MILLION MILES with a clean Record!

May is pretty safety conscious. Dispatch prefers you to always scale loads, and if it was heavy they would have the shipper fix it.
As far as May goes, they're a good company in general, treat their drivers well. The shop guys aren't the brightest, so be aware of that. Good company to make a start and get experience though.
If you want to stay a while, they'll want you to be a trainer. Personally, im getting in a years exp. and moving on, but am pretty confident it will be on good terms. Even though I don't plan to stay here long term, I still reccommend it as a starter company.bam87 Thanks this. -
Good advice and input. Thanks fellas.

I am thinking they will not allow it, I asked them about it as applying to me, specifically, as if I wanted to do it, and they said "You don't live that far, just drive your car in and leave it at the terminal, we have security, it'll be safer here than at your house"...I didn't push it, I didn't want to be like the other annoying new driver who asked twenty questions just to hear himself talk...You may get different results at your terminal and with your specific circumstance of course...also they have a couple of vans that they lend out to drivers hanging around at the terminal, like by the hour, so as not to have them bobtailing to the mall for ice cream, which also makes me think they'll tell you NO
I'll get better information for you when I hook up with my trainer in a couple days, though, sorry, that above is just what I learned today -
Well there has been a change of plans. The trucking school in Co Springs wants me to pay too much out of pocket on top of what the VA was already going to pay. So I have now opted for Swift. Their school is located in Phoenix. Supposed to start 22SEP2014.
