But but.....I’m being paid. I am doing something the carrier told me to do.

So according to what some are saying, you could empty in San Diego and drive empty off duty PC non-stop to your house in Bangor Maine. Then immediately be dispatched on a load because you would have had your 34 during your continuous non-stop drive of 3200+ miles. "No limits on how far you can drive on PC", and if you are off duty then there is no HOS requirement to stop, right?

This scenario is exactly what some people used to do decades ago when freight was more regulated and 'backhauls' were rare, your freight lane (tariff) was one way and you came back empty, but the rate covered the move profitably.

Dispatcher to Driver - okay buddy I see you're empty in Memphis. We have nothing for you today, why don't you head to Phoenix, I'm not dispatching you right now, but will find a load for you there once you get there. Okay to PC it, you're not dispatched. Call me after you get there.

Decades ago no one was worried about PC. 70 cents bought you another 70 hours was the saying. Just start another log book.

Think of it this way; PC isn't any different than Off Duty. If your on line 1 than PC could apply. Any other line at it doesn't work out. I never understood the need for PC at all anyway. If you're off duty then you're line 1. Lots of reasons to drive off duty.

Is the Carrier's yard, next load or other business related issues in Bangor Maine?

I would venture to say that there could be reasons a person would drive coast to coast for PC but I think if I were a DOT officer, you'd have some tall talking & serious convincing to do to make me go along with that being PC. Especially if he had Fla drivers license for example.
Ok, so lets say a O/O was in Cali & was about to go on a week vacation. He wanted to meet his family in Bangor, Maine rather than drive to Fla, then to Maine. With some convincing, I might be forced to accept that, but it would be after some in depth questioning I think.
But if he had Nevada license & was going PC to Bangor, Maine, I have some serious issues with that I think. It would have to be an awfully good scenario for me to accept PC from Cali to Maine with a Nevada license for example.

No. The rules say you still must get enough rest.

    Sure.

    Another question about PC

You can't be relieved of all responsibility and be getting paid.

You're not required to do a pretrip, that is not required by the regs. So whether or not you log it is between you and your motor carrier. Not the DOT.

Forget the guidance, forget company policy! At the end, on the side of the road PC is what a MCSAP/CVSA/DOT officer determines it to be. I'm not trying to argue this point as much as ground this PC conversation back to basics. EVEN if you later beat the case in court, you still will have an OOS order in the CSA data along with a tow bill and being late. I have spoken to DOT officers about this distance thing. If you are hundreds of miles PC they are going to stop you, especially if you are laden or yanking an empty. This interpretation problem is not limited to PC. It can be applied to almost all the rules.
