How is the added heated calculated? I'm not sure on diesel tanks but on gas the state has people checking the actual... I would think it's the same?
-
There's a formula they use..i forgot how they do it exactly..but there was a big fuss about this years ago of hot fuel..
-
Around here they all have 20k tanks, except one very small store that has 3 10s, and only 4 fuel islands I think.

All gas and fuel pumps are checked and calibrated by I think the department of agriculture weights and measurements. You can see the calibration sticker on the pump. Old pumps are not allowed unless the new flow meters are inside. They are accurate to within .0003 gallons. The flow meter looks like a small engine with 4 pistons in a square. Very accurate. Hot fuel use to work many years ago but not with the new flow meters.

I have literally hauled hundreds of these tanks. Back a few years ago the Florida required every fuel storage tank within the state to comply with a new standard by a certain date. I offered to haul off the old tanks (straight to the closest scrapyard
) for free to some large contractors and spent almost a year hauling nothing but fuel storage tanks. I NEVER saw a normal gas station with less than three 8-10,000 gal tanks. I can't imagine a large truck stop with only three 10,000 gallon tanks. Does not compute.
I do believe they heat the fuel. The expansion rate of fuel due to temperature is very high and this would allow them to sell significantly more fuel than they purchase, IF AND ONLY IF the amount they purchase is not already adjusted for temperature to equal the volume at 85 degrees, which it probably is. The more likely scenario is that the fuel is heated because the distributers tried to get over on the retailers by adjusting for temperature.Last edited: Jun 12, 2016

Another thing to consider is if you fill your tank with fuel at 72 degrees and then park your truck, as the temperature of that fuel rises you would be spilling fuel. Take your handy dandy temperature thing-a-ma-bob and point it at your fuel tank on the sunny side of your truck after sitting in a lot for a few hours. The tree huggers might have a hand in this as well as COMMON SENSE. I understand that gut wrenching feeling that we are being ripped off all over the place but we need to consider the big picture before going off.

There should be a decal on the pumps stating they are temperature compensated. This crap does not go on these days! If it was do you think everyone is looking the other way and paying off inspectors? Do you think the people who install pumps offer a heater option? I don't think so. One of those guys would rat them out. Do you think the people who install the tanks offer an option? I don't think so. Only a licensed contractor is allowed to install these tanks and the pumps. I'm sure there is an inspector up their ### during the whole process. This argument can all be answered by just using plain old logic and common sense.

WELL PUT!!
That is the funny thing about conspiracy theories, THEY ARE ONLY THEORIES NOT FACT. LOLLonesome Thanks this. -
Not likely the distributors. They just hold stock and sell to the retailer. The terminal where the product is pulled does the bills with temperature and gravity clearly stated. As far as I know, Pilot does not own any terminals.
I think its possible the station is setting their price per gallon at a set temperature and adjusting the temp at the pump to ensure they are selling what is being paid for. Probably a result of the hot fuel lawsuit.
I could be way off base but it makes sense to me.BIGZILLA Thanks this.
