Double clutching is not hard...but I think clutches today need a lot less leg pressure to push in than they did years ago. So old timers tend to shift without using the clutch....and call it floating the gears.
Some trucks today still have strong return springs, and it can be tiring to hold the clutch in while at a red light.
I think the difficulty in double clutching is getting the timing down of clutch in, shift to neutral, clutch out, clutch back in, shift to gear, clutch out.....so 6 steps to shift one gear! Times 10 gears is 60 steps to go through all the gears.
Compare that with floating gears, you don't use the clutch at all, except starting from stop.
Which method is less of a pain!
