Do tow truck operators who hold a CDL require endorsements to tow endorsable vehicles? For example a tractor trailer is in combination(tanker hauling 5,000 gallons of gasoline) and it breaks down. Does the tow truck driver need endorsements to tow this vehicle? Wondering what you guys think. I've encountered it a few times, I know the answer but was given plenty of opinions from numerous drivers, OTL and heavy duty tow drivers.

OK Dieselbear, you sure know how to pick 'em. As I am not entirely sure on this I will have to "assume" ( which I hate doing) that yes a tow truck driver that tows big rigs would at least have to possess a hazmat endorsement, if not a tanker endorsement as well.
Common sense is what is telling me this, so therefore I'm probably wrong.
If the driver is hauling hazmat then I would think that the tow truck driver would have to have the necessary letters on his/her license also. -
Yes, they do.

I have had this a few times over the years and we use this in training classes for new inspectors. Drives them crazy everytime. I'll post the answer after other's chime in.

Are you sure? or just guessing?

At least you could pm me the answer...I'm dying to know

I'm sure they need the endorsements to tow it.

I'd say yes . I broke down with a loaded hazmat tanker a couple of months ago . The tow company sent a hook for the tractor and another tractor for the tank .
I know of an O/O with a 1 ton dually that got stopped pulling a large boat . The boat had over 120 gallons of gas on it and he was told he couldn't pull it without placards and a hazmat endorsement . He was not happy when it was hauled to impound by a rollback . Still no placards and most likely the driver didn't have a hazmat endorsement . -
Rick, I don't doubt for a minute that it happened like this. But that is not the correct coarse of action. If that scenario was true, every tractor would need placards for your saddle tanks. For gasoline you need 1001 lbs or more to be required to be placarded. Plus that's part of the commodity being shipped, it's not a "Tank of gasoline" on the bills. But again you get officers that do stupid stuff that make the rest of us look bad.Big Don and rocknroll nik Thank this.
