What is the advantage/disadvantage if the shaft lenght on a predator 10k antena? 9, 12, or 17 inches. Is the overall length the same? longer shaft shorter whip? Or is the whip length always the same? Thanks for your help.
antena help please

I think that if they have the same number of coils, the overall length stays roughly the same, the whip length gets shorter as the shaft gets longer. The whip length gets even shorter with the double coil and comp models, and shorter still with the "short whip" double coil model. I think they recommend the 9 and 12 inch shafts for mirror mounts, and the 17 inch model for roof mounts on cars.

Thanks Josh.c! I am trying to make my whip as short a possible, I slip seat with a daytime city driver. Trees and other low flying wires and whatever else wreck an antena. I would hate to loose a $100 antena so I want it to fly as low as possible.

Get a double coil 10k if your worried about the length. I had a double coil on my truck and never had a problem with trees, etc. Now I have a single coil 9" on and it's taking a beating due to the longer whip. The whip is bent in 2 different directions but the swr is holding true. May have to put the double coil back on.
The good thing about 10k's is if something breaks you can replace the part that is broken w/o trashing the whole antenna.
The double coil I ordered from Kale himself and the single coil I order from Sparky's cb shack. Sparky still has the 9" single on sale. -
Every antenna is basically a 102inch whip in design. The reason you see the coils and such is so that the antenna builders can get the correct wavelength but have an overall shorter antenna. So the coils allow you to have a shorter whip while still being is the correct wavelength.
If you took apart just about any well built antenna and measured every part of the antenna,the shaft,coils and whip you would see that it would be very close to 102 inches in total length.
Those antenna rock! i have never found an antenna that works as good as a 10K. -
They are a well built antenna but, a 102" whip would do better if installed correctly.I know the 102" whip can not be used in every installation due to it's length, that is where the load antennas come in handy.
Coils = Loss
