I have a question about antennas. Would it be better to have a taller antenna mounted lower or a shorter antenna mounted higher? That's being the top of the antenna the same height. Or does it matter? I need to keep the top of the antenna less than 12 feet high.

There might be specific caveats. 102 inch whip on fender vs a 2 foot whip on mirror....I imagine giant whip wins. @rabbiporkchop says my 4.5 foot Wilson 1000 magnet mount on the roof would beat said fender whip.

I was thinking a 4ft vs 3ft mirror mounted on the vertical bar. Mounted up high or down low just wondering if it would make any difference?

You would be better to mount the 3ft'er high, compared to the 4ft'er low

I think it all depends on how it is attached to the vehicle.
I would generally prefer to run a shorter antenna mounted to a higher location

DL550CAT and Bout Z Thank this.

I agree.. im thinkin of w.coast style mirrors as an example. A 3ft on the top bar..waaay better than a 4ft on the bottom bar

As tall as possible is better...Im learning that the feed point(where coax connects to ant)is supposed to be at basically your grounding point(where antenna is mounted)....
A 4 foot is better than 3 ft of same ant type..A 5 is netter than 4 ect ect...Supposed to be easier to tune and more efficient makeing it easier on the radio and better tx/rec..

    DL550CAT Thanks this.

Yeah I was just curious. I need to stay under 12ft but I'm in a day cab pulling a step. Very few loads are taller than the cab. So I doubt it needs to be as tall. I don't need a big system, just need it to work reasonably well.

Keep it as tall as you can..as long as you clear 13'6" your good unless you are in places that have only 12' clearences..
A taller ant set up is more efficient and easier on the radio and helps it get out further..Doesnt add power to radio or nothing..Think of it as a short ant being in a vally or on top of the only hill in the world....Go as tall as you can but stay onder your height limitations..

We used to say height is might but if you're only talking about 5 feet you honestly can take your pick.
