Didn't quite get that point because those are some of the reasons I'm thinking about going to trucking school... -
my "point" being, whenever the economy tanks, or a person's job is lost from the company moving away, or through down-sizing, it seems as though everyone jumps on the trucking band wagon, thinking trucking will give them a happy care free life of money, benefits, jobs, etc,etc etc........
which just isn't true..............if it WERE TO BE TRUE..........we;d all be zillion-aire's by now............and GOD knows, I AIN'T..........
when things get better, (economy wise), those same band-wagon jumping people leave trucking and go back to their former jobs, or anther industry that WILL PAY MORE than trucking.
many will hear,
i made over $150,000 last year driving trucks"............
yeah, right.............NOT a company driver............maybe an owner-operator.........but that is his GROSS pay...........he will NEVER tell you his NET pay........you know, after he pays his truck expenses, like fuel, insurance, bank notes, etc,etc...........
i'll just bet the 'average" owner-operator "takes home" roughly $40,000 to $45,000.............a whopping DROP form the "$150,000 he made......!!!!!!!!
i am (personally) sick and tired of everyone coming into trucking when the economy tanks. does anyone realistically think the economy does NOT affect trucking..........??
truck drivers are laid off, companies have closed, factories ARE NOT shipping, because many of those have closed.......!!
there is only SO MUCH freight to be moved............
i don't even want to hear, "yeah but, with out trucks, america stops, or america NEEDS drivers"..........no we don't............ we need freight to be moved on a REGULAR basis, not "once in a while.
i call many "wannabe truckers" a pariah on the industry, causing lower wages, terrible working conditions, equipment, etc, etc. because the companies that hire the wannabe's, can pay LOW WAGES and many times no benefits of very POOR benefits, which many drivers NEED benefits due to families they are supporting. this affects the over all scope of the industry, the constant flow of wannabes'...........
you know, the medical field pays MORE, and there are MORE jobs in the medical field. why don't people go to school and learn medical jobs................x-ray tech, sonogram, physical therapy, etc,etc.......???
the trucking industry i have ALWAYS felt was the "dumping ground" for the people that think it'll save them from hardships............
but then they find out, and in SHORT TIME, they bail out of trucking..........why should we continue to see this decline in an industry to simply satisfy the wanton desires of those that will NOT stay in it for the long haul............???

First I want to thank all of you for responding I didnt expect this many responses and so quickly Thank You.
Rerun, you mention the benefits with the state. The benefits are there but they are nothing like they use to be. In fact my health insurance is through my wifes company due to the fact we couldnt afford it with the state any longer. Sadly this use to be one of the strong points with having a state job but so much has changed in the last few years I guess the same can be said for the trucking industry.
Capt. Gruuvy, I like your suggestion about attending a school of my own choice and have explored the ones in this area. There is one I really like that is associated with Ivy Tech and not far from home. I am strongly considering it. I took a drive out there, spoke to some of the students and instructors. They let me explore one of their trucks and even offered to let me sit in on the classes when trucking recruiters would come by.
Smurfette, thanks for the suggestion about the threads, Ive been reading those for a few days now after I found this site. In the past I was just looking for web pages and news-clippings but this is much more helpful.
For the record, I have gone to truck stops and spoke to many of the drivers, usually I will offer to buy them dinner or coffee but not one has taken me up on this offer but not one has turned me down just to speak with me. These are a few of the things I have learned and looking into . . .
· I havent met a signal person that likes the company they drive for but the o/o seem more content.
· I have also seen a common thread with staying away from CR England which is too bad, their school just not 5 miles from my house.
· Take into consideration my family and I have. I have 3 children: two are in college and one in High School. Each company I have contacted (the ones that will speak with me) I always ask if their trucks have an extra bunk for a passenger (for the record CRE does). From time to time I would like to take my wife or children with me. CRE allows this after a probation period as does Schneider but the smaller companies seem to avoid this.
· The pay is about what I am making now and as my wife shares; if I stay where Im at I will loose my mind (but at least its evidence that I have a mind to loose) .
Well these are just a few thoughts and maybe some insight possibly. This is a difficult and stressful decision we are making. As far as what happened at my work place I cant say anymore as the whole matter is being investigated and I dont want to get into anymore trouble than I already have.

like i said, "go for it", at least you are making a change in jobs. i would recommend CR England if only for the convenience of thier location to you at this time. as i said "do your time" (no pun) and get it done, then move on to another company...........why drive further away for training, when something closer is easier..........???
you know, for me, with my experience, i wouldn't go to CR England, and this is only because I CAN BE choosy as to where i want to go to work. but as a wannabe, you have choices that are not as available to you as you might think. i the end, they all want you money.
look at it this way too.........say you go to CR England, train, get a job........go on the road, come home.........park your rig on thier property, go home.........!!
how convenient is this........?? you go to "another school", but you get a job at a different company, and now, you gotta find parking.........unless you are one of the "lucky few" that can park a rig on your property....... -
buffalo jim... I'd say to you that if all you have is CR England and you despise your current predicament, you're not gonna like CR England any less. I don't care so much for there training program (I've ran into....metaphorically speaking... a couple of there "student teams") That's not right putting 2 people that don't know anything about this industry in the same truck for a month or so. Covanent used to do the same crap... I don't know if they still do. Just remember, if the company trains you, they own you for at least 1 year. like it or not you're married to them or you Pay big $$$$.
Good luck -
I have decided (and prayed over) going to a private school in Gary, IN that has a good reputation and will work with me. I've had a few offers from a couple trucking companies that I had applied to but haven't signed with anyone and really can't since I don't have a CDL as of yet. Again I appreciate any help or advice that any can offer
